Hi

I've bought a Folding Camper for this Summer and I love it, but Im now thinking that I would like to upgrade to a Caravan for next year. As Im new to this I would love some advise for which car to upgrade to. My Ford Focus 1.6 petrol tows my FC no probs, but im well aware that I will need to upgrade next year. I like the Style of Toyota Corolla Verso (but have read they not that great for Towing) and also Ford Focus C-Max - so I suppose thats the kinda shape Im after. Id prob be looking to spend £10000 on car. As for Caravan, I dont wanna break the bank. It will be my first Van so it will be older do you think I could get decent 4 berth for around £2k??? As I said Im newbie - so any rec's of Makes/Models that make an ideal starter van would be very much appreciated. Being a single parent I will be going away myself for trips with my 6 year old I really looking at the lightest model I can prob get, but of course that will serve us well.

Many Thanks
WK

For your next car, a Mondeo TDCi would be hard to beat. Great towcar and loads of choice, plus you'll no doubt find one for <£10k which gives you more to spend on the van!

Can't help with your caravan though, just be vigilant and ensure it's not riddled with damp ( or badly repaired damp) or stolen! Try and get one that comes with all the accessories as well (awning, hook up cable, waterhog, wastemaster, step etc), otherwise you'll be forking out for those as well.

Its difficult to suggest a suitable cheap van, you say a decent 4 berth for £2k.. Problem is one persons idea of decent van is another persons idea of a shed.. I would suggest as a starter you go and look at lots of vans and see what you can get for £2k, it is the cheaper end of the market so they will be older. Also I personally wouldnt buy a van who's manufacturer has gone out of business, but many do.  As a starting point try Elddis, Bailey,Sterling, Swift or Lunar 4 berths, they are all still in business and if you go with the mondeo suggestion, all have models easily within that cars ability and all do 4 berth models in varying specifications and therefore weights. But do lots of looking and research, the internet has lots of info.

Thanks for your replies and advice. Ellers I have been looking at Elddis vans as they seem light, and my sister has one and I like the layout of the inside with the 2 seperate seating areas and end bed unit being able to be curtained of which would allow me to leave bed up if need be.

I know van will be older, and not as "modern" inside. But as Long as its solid and damp free then I'll be happy - I can add my own wee touches.

I read somewhere to take Damp Tester with me, so will hunt one down. Theres just so many Caravans out there. Think I'll start looking in the New Year and start my research just now and enjoy using my FC. It is great and I only wish we lived in rain free climate lol.

As for Cars, that will be a long haul. Im a bit picky as to style but I do need to think why Im buying it - mainly to tow, but then again I dont wanna be driving around in a car that I wouldnt Normally pick (if not for towing)

Hi

Just bought the Kia Ceed as a replacement for the Kia Cerato.  The Cerato was build on the corolla normal not verso chassis and running gear and I had no problems towing my big Adria Altea 542DK with a weight of 1300Kg.

The Ceed is not a people carrier type car but it is a great family hatch and I expect this to tow as good as the Cerato.  I also looked at the Octavia and it is a nice car that will pull with ease (depending on van) but the 7 years warrenty did it for me and you can pick a year old model ceed up for a fantastic price (if your not a badge snob)

Cheers

Richard

Decide on the caravan first. its weight will have a big bearing on the car you choose.
