Never had this much noise before when towing, and only towing a very lightweight micro caravan (a Dutch Kip 600kg max weight) with Nissan Almera 1.6 automatic.

I was getting a very loud sort of creaking, cronking groaning metal-on-metal noise (sorry, best description I could come up with!) but only on the slow bits, going through towns, etc. No noise at higher speeds.

The van was towing perfectly and as far as I can tell, no probs with the hitch at that end. Ditto with the caravan brakes - they were ok and wheel cool every time I checked!

My neighbour said it would probably be the exhaust coming loose and needing new rubbers?

Any thoughts? I've checked the running/towing gear and it all seems ok. I have a westafalia SSk tow hitch/stabilser and I clean it and the tow ball regularly and keep it dry.

Thought I would take the car to the garage and see what they say. I was also wondering if it could be the suspension on the back of the car.

I'd be pleased to hear anyone's thoughts on the matter!

Our Alko stabiliser hitch frequently creaks, we only hear it when going slowly.

Yes so does mine! It says in the operation leaflet to ignore the odd creak, but this is much louder than I've heard before. It seemed to start approx 30 miles from where I was going, through small villages and onto an uneven B road for 12 miles. I thought it was just the B road, but checked and oiled everything in sight just in case. The same noise appeared as soon as I started back the same way though, through to the A55, once I'd picked up speed it stopped, then back again from Chester thru Nantwich and onwards as I slowed down again on the local roads.

Taking the car to the garage tomorrow, to see if they can shed any light on it!

Thanks for your answer, Jennifern :)

Our original Alko got really creaky, when OH looked inside the head he found one of the pads had a crack in it. After he replaced it, it was quiet for a while.

Have you looked at the pads?

put a bit of weight in the car and take on a good test drive to eliminate that, dont think it is the exhaust as the van doesnt put any more weight on the back end than a passenger in the back

would suggest giving the hitch pads a good clean with brake cleaner, the reason they reack is that when you are turning sharply is the pads are moving at a bigger angle than on normal roads

Just go on the Alko site, they have some good diagrams there.

(Ah, no.....yours are not Alko of course!)

And if they are ok, do like Alan said.

sounds good. Taking the car to my lcoal garage tomorrow so they can rule out that and the back suspension... then it will be onto the hitch pads... will have to go find the instructions for that!

Just a thought - ther is a very small amount of rust on the towball - would that be enough to make a noise that loud? Says on the instructions to keep surfaces of both hitch and towball clean and dry? I really can't see a bit of rust doing that.

I hope it's not the pads or something similar as I've a feeling I won't be able to get them from the UK!

Yes, rust is bad, you need to remove it and clean the pads.

Right then. Car at garage at present. They can find no sign of wear to the exhaust rubber holder thingys, nor do they think there is any excessive wear on the back suspension. (they are putting a new cover on a gaitor whilst its there, but that's another story.)

Sooo yesterday I went and bought a grease gun. Took me a few hours (mostly on you tube LOL) to figure out how to fill it and use it, but I had a nagging suspicion that it might need grease putting into the little nipples on the towbar. They took half a tin before the space was full! I don't think it was done properly by someone else sometime last year. This might account for the groaning noise.

Got out the instructions for use sheets for the stabilizer and tow bar. Apparantly I have a Winterhoff drawbar coupling with stabilising facility. I also have fitted a Westfalia SSk anti snake thingy. I found that one of the friction pad shoes on this needed greasing (I actually did both) but one was very tight and not moving as it should. It does now. So that might help. It says in the instructions of this to check the wear of the pads every few months... it doesn't say what they should look like in the first place! It also says to change them after 30,000 miles. As this caravan is 'vintage' (LOL) it may be that they need changing. However, I don't think this is the case. The caravan was still working perfectly even in spite of the noise and towing well.

As concerns the Winterhoff hitch, it says that 'when the vhicle is in motion, friction between the linings and the coupling ball may cause noise which is however, ireelevant for the funtion of the drawbar coupling.' However, it also says that noise can also be caused by 1, Accumulation of dirt between the friction lining and coupling ball; 2. dry running of the drawbar/towbar in the bushes of the overrun assembly and 3. removable coupling balls at the towing vehicle. The last doesn't apply I don't think. I'm sure I'd know by now if it was the wrong towball.

However the advice for 2. is to grease the bushes by means of the grease nipple (see earlier) and rmove the bellows in order to greast the exposed towbar, both of which I have now done.

So unless either the bushes on the towbar or the friction pads on the stabliser need changing, I think I might have solved the problem.

I still have to clean off the bit of rust on the towbar and underneath the hitch and clean with brake cleaner (been and bought some of that ready) when it stops raining.

I won't know until I tow it!

Can't think of anything else I can do... apart from sourcing those two bits mentioned which might need replacing!

Thanks for bearing with me on this topic and thanks for all the help and advice.

Hi Tim, No, the tyres are fine, I did check in case this was happening though. I stopped several times on the journey home to check the brakes were working (and the handbrake was off) and they were ok too.

I'm just waiting on some dry weather now so that i can clean the tow ball nd hitch with wet and dry and brake cleaner as suggesed by someone earlier!
