We were travelling southbound on M6 yesterday and were going to take the toll to use the lovely service station The sign definitely says "trailers are charged extra". Fortunately, now I have read this post, we chose the M6, (unfortunately we then took a comfort break at Hilton Park services but that's another issue!)
The whole situation with the M6 Toll is a rip-off IMO. The scheme should never have been a toll in the first place but a government highways agency road like all other motorways we pay are road tax for.
NO instead the idea was sold to a private company (Australian at that) to screw moterists in the area of their money.
OFFICIALLY A RIP_OFF!!!

But how do you respond if I were to say to you that the road would never have been built had it not been built as a toll road? Its pointless talking about the amount of tax you pay on your car or fuel as that goes into general Government coffers and helps to pay for the NHS and the Police etc. About a quarter of a million people a week are willing to pay the toll. It can only be a rip-off if people have no other choice which they do. Which just leaves a decision on whether to pay a toll and travel on a relatively uncongested road or take a risk and use the M6. I suspect in future any new motorways will be built the same way. There was talk of extending the toll motorway towards Manchester but have not heard anything recently.

Its choice, innit. You don't have to use it. We have just decided not to use it any more even though it is dead convenient for visiting our daughter in Oxford.
if your car is taxed as Disabled you can buy a 3 year pass for £15 , this allows you to make unlimeted journeys on the Toll road as long as the Disabled person is in the car, it also covers the caravan as well, many other Toll roads and Bridges operate a similar scheme
We wished we had used the toll on Tuesday, it was lunchtime and the M6 through Birmingham was still horrendous but at least the traffic kept moving. I don't mind the price for a quick smooth run.
We once use the toll road and it turned out to be very expensive. My kids were in the back seat watching a DVD and my lovely oh was driving but was half listening to the film track, the car we were driving in convoy with suddenly shot past us with my sister waving and pointing the way we should be going, it was too late to change lanes. So, we ended up using the toll road, going the long way round to our destination and also buying our own breakfast along the way, which my mum had promised to buy us at the next services. She was in the other car. Hubby mentally kicked himself all week and the rest of the family had a good laugh and still do at our expense.
------------- 2* Camper soon to be a 3!
Got me an areobed so I'm off camping!!

Hi David.
What i am trying to say is that now the toll road is in place, there is no possible opportunity for a normal highways agency relief road for the M6 to take place in that area which would have been free of charge, which is what the road tax paying motorist deserved 10 years ago.
So the goverments one and only opertunity to sort this out Has GONE and was done in a cost cutting cowards way of selling the idea to a private company which did not fully address the problem.
So the road tax payers only chance to ease a major congestion problem around the M6 was sold on to make money. THAT IS THE CON!
I will never use the toll road for that reason. In fact i would say to the minority of people who do needlessly use it YOU ARE PAVING THE WAY FOR MORE TOLL ROADS.
Why on earth are you paying road tax? It was scrapped in 1937. You may well pay VED but that money, like almost all Government income, is not hypothecated.
