I made a mistake with my last towcar (7-seater MPV); perfect for the job, but no spare wheel. So I carried a proper spare in the luggage compartment, but it was always in the way. After 4 years, I changed to the same model, but a 5-seater with properly stowed, full sized spare wheel.
When booking through Red Pennant to got to France, they spotted the 7-seats situation and advised me that, in the event of calling out recue for a flat tyre, failure to have a readily serviceable spare would incur a £100 surcharge.
Looking through a 1947 ABC of British cars, I noticed that the Morgan 4/4 had two spare wheels neatly located at the rear. Shows how far backwards we have advanced over the years.
Bertie.
