I have noticed that on another post about wiring towbar electrics a member commented and said

"it is essential that pin 6 is wired through a split relay from 1998 onwards"

Forgive me for asking but i thought pin 6 was for the brake lights, and a split relay is for charging an extra battery.

me thinks this is going to be harder than it looks !!!!!!!!!!

You are quite right, pin6 on 12n is for brake lights & pin6 on 12s is for running fridge, ie power off with engine off, confused? you will be. 2 choices here methinks, pay somebody to do the wiring for you or diy & pay somebody far more to sort out the resulting damage.

How old is your car? If made within the last few yrs it would be easier to get a dedicated loom. Are you wiring just for a trailer 12n, or for a caravan 12n/12s or 13pin?

Cars made this century generally have canbus systems, all cars made within the last few yrs do. You cannot scotchlok wiring to to lights in the boot as in yrs past.

The cheap way is to use a bypass relay, the better way is to use a prewired dedicated loom either for 7pin trailer or extra loom for 12n/12s caravan with twin cables. Many prewired looms come with the new 13pin push & twist socket as this is taking over from the old system.

....this is what you want, & reasonably priced. Dunno how straightforward the fitting is, maybe somebody will help.

I notice that it says for a 3door, the website also lists a 5door, dunno what the difference would be, but its pointing you in't right direction.
