Several posts have stated that it is the law that towing mirrors must be used when towing. Is anyone able to clarify which act/section of the road traffic act covers this. The info is required to assist in a debate with a mate on this very subject. Thanks.
Martinez is correct. Now just whether you win or your mate wins the argument depends upon what his argument is. The legislation does not work as folk think as it does not specifically say that you must have extended mirrors. The Regs merely specify that you must have mirrors on your car which enable you to view to the measurements Martinez has specified. If your normal mirrors achieve that when you have a trailer on the back then you do not need the extended mirrors we all use. The practical issue is that as vans are wider than cars you have to extend the mirror to achieve those distances. Easiest way to do that is to attach an extended mirror
So if your mate is saying that the law does not say you must always use extended mirrors he is technically correct to the letter of the law. Its the design of the caravan which requires you to put mirrors on.
