Just got back from Standmore Hall, Bridgnorth in our Hyundai Tucson (2004 5 speed diesel). After leaving caravan in storage I found selecting any gears hard. This happened when we got to Bridgnorth as well. But next day clutch & gearbox worked. One other thing, whilst I was trying put car into gear I failed when engine working but after I switched it off I got every gear...??? Anyone got ideas what is wrong.

The clutch isn't clearing. Check the adjustment would be step number one.........

Sounds to me like a clutch slave cylinder fault. Book it in at a good independent garage.

Clutch definatley dragging, maybe due to expansion after heating up during maneovering the van.

Or the clutch master cylinder,

have you checked the fluid levels??

Presumably there wont be any adjustment as if i remember correctly it is a hydraulic system, if it was a slave or master cylinder leak the fluid level would drop.. air would enter the system and evenually your clutch pedal would hit the floor and not return.

If the pedal still feels ok in operation but its just hard to select gear with the engine running, then i would say your clutch friction plate has had it im afraid.

Have you noticed it slipping at all ?

The main test i use (i currently am a tech for BMW.. But worked for Hyundai for a couple of years), is to try and select the gear with the engine running then turn the engine off, if it slips straight in then its definatly the clutch plate !

As it went into gear after I switched engine off it does look like the clutch. But I did manage to use car for hoilday and towing car home,,,?

It may well be as said that its dragging when its very hot and has been used for reveresing etc, i would say this would really only happen if the clutch was well worn, might not be dead just yet.. but it is a que to get it looked at/replaced before you next need to tow with it.

I do recall the Santa Fe haveing rubbish clutches, saw a fair few of them fail to a point the car could no longer be driven ! there again that was on the IOW where a fair few seem to have no idea what clutch control is lol.

A few corrections, a slipping clutch means that it clears too much and cant create enough pressure on the flywheel to give drive.

The condition here is the opposite where the clutch has grip on the flywheel but doesnt seperate enough to allow gear change.

If it's ok now there is a slim chance that the fluid got too hot (assuming it's hydraulic) and couldnt open the clutch or you have a slave/master cylinder fault, often these faults dont show fluid leaks and new cylinders fix it.

If it's still graunching gears when you change the pressure plate could be worn or as above hydraulic fault.

If your not sure please take it to a decent garage for inspection and repair as it will not get better on it's own and graunching gears will damage the gearbox.

don't know anyhing about these particular cars as I'm a Ford man. But, as everyone is suggesting it is a hydraulic clutch the first thing I would do is change the fluid and bleed the system. It could be something as simple as air in the system or contaminated fluid being affected by heat as suggested earlier.

Just to let you know, had new clutch fitted today and mechanic said clutch plate was worn. Local garage that did job is always buisy so confident in their work hopefully.... Car now changes gear like F1 car.

One thing I've noticed since clutch change car is running a lot smoother. Looks like DMF that was changed was on way out....

Now that car has been sorted how can I protect said clutch whilst towing...?

Dont slip the clutch. Change gear smoothly.


No 100,000rpm standing starts


But also dont let the engine labour, Yes it may pull up the hill in top gear but if the revs are too low you could be killing the DMF also.

Find where peak torque is and try to keep near that figure.


You should drive modern diesels the same as older petrol engines. More revs wont harm them. Too many though and you run out of power.
