Hi, Has anyone here had experience of using a motorcycle to tow with? If so, what set up did you have on the bike?
My partner and I are keen campers and motorcyclists, but with 2 small dogs are looking to use a small trailer so we can all join in the fun.
These are readily available in the USA, but not so here. We expect to have to design the tow hitch ourselves, which is fine because he has an engineering background. Just looking for ideas before we start (probably once it is too cold for motorcycle camping... LOL)
Hi.. I have seen them on ebay from time to time. You just have to keep on looking as I am for a trailer for the back of my motorhome to carry a moped. That is how I know they are advertised...
Not towed myself with a bike but a friend of mine had a Honda Goldwing with side-car and trailer He used to travel all over Europe with it I think the towbar was a Honda one
Maybe you could modify a side-car for the doggies and put your camping gear in the trailer

hi .i use a 1500cc kawasaki drifter. i modified a squire sidecat into a trailer. well used the body . tows really good ideal for taking the dog with me.
i do have a teardrop that i towed behind the trike. have towed it behind the drifter ,but as its illegal to use it because of its width i stopped doing it.
have thoughtof making a single sleep pod to tow behind .the dog is stillliving well so its on hold for awhile.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
you need to check the law re putting dogs in the trailer...if thats what you intend to do.
we use a trailer on a Pan. tows really well, and you have to be a bit carefull as its easy to forget its there.....dont want to remember just as you start filtering.
take a look at this gallery and you will see what we have.gallery
We tow a small freewheel trailer and love it. Far better for camping. About using one for towing one for a dog,a member of our bike club used to have one for his German shepard dog and untill it died he was never told he couldn't do it.The law might have changed since or not recomended.
Thanks everyone. Nice to get positive feedback rather than the ones from biker forums who just don't seem to get it!
Plan on building a trike when time and money allow. Only PEOPLE are not allowed to travel in the trailer. There are strict size guidelines but that is no problem. Some of the photos gave some ideas on fitting the tow bar to the bike, which is where we are up to as I don't think there is one designed for a 1200 Bandit.
Here's a review of the campmaster, may give you some idea's.
------------- Yesterday is already a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
I was at Copdock Bike Show today lots of trikes on show including one with a teardrop trailer behind him Can put pics up if you like but won't be for a couple of days as I'm back at work tomorrow

guy got pulled for his "oil drum trailer". PC was also concerned re the safety of the dog in it, so best to check the requriement to allow the dog in there.
but worth a chuckle at the rider who initally seemed to think that things were working before he got stopped!
as far as i know there isnt any regs about toe hitches on bikes . bit like commercials etc exempt the car towbar rules. i mount mine on to the mudguard stays . its an ideal place on the drifter. even the back lights have a plug by the rear axle for removing the rar big mud guard . i just connect right in there . when trailer not on connect the rear lights etc by pushing back in the plug. itslike its made for towing. you must remember only 1mtr wide for bikes. .have tried the solo rear wheel type trailers they are nice but a two wheel is better it stands up when taken off the single one can be a bit of a struggle. . dogs have been carted in trailers for years .

There's an abridged version of the video on YouTube - "Mouse and Molly's Pull on motorway cops", and yes, that is camping gear on the back of the bike, the Construction and Use issues with the trailer have since been addressed (by fitting mudguards and proper lights), the oil leak has been fixed (by replacing the engine!) and Molly, I understand, now has a pair of goggles.
