I'm looking to get my first caravan and the other day I drove past a weighbridge so I thought I would weigh my car.  I was was shocked at the difference between the kerbweight in the manual and the actual kerbweight.

Manual says 1580kgs

My car actually weighed in at 1790kgs.   Ok this included wife and two small children so after deducting their weight it is 1690kgs.  Still...thats 110kg heavier then what is used matching programmes.  Also it included only half a tank of fuel but it did have an extra 15kg more (thats me!) than the usual 75kg allowance for driver and luggage.

I do have a factory fitted towbar that folds away which will accounts for some of the weight but still surprised about the rest. 30ish kgs for towbar I guess.

Makes me wonder if all quoted kerbweights are on the low side and actually how accurate matching programmes are or is it just an extra safety margin in the 85% rule?

To us this means that a caravan I had previously discounted at a 90% match is now bob on 85%.

Hi Grifterman my brochure weight states 1557 kg yet my car weighs 1660 kg excluding 75kg driver.

Thats a massive difference of 178 kg, the higher the spec the heavier the car.

A mate of mine was worried about his match so took his C Max to a weigh bridge and again got massive difference to his brochure weight

What car do you have ???

Bessie

85% weight might be based on 85% of the unladen weight maybe?

Spare wheel and a few other bits maybe an optional extra, Seems common these days and some cars dont even have space for one.

2 small children so car seats and maybe a bit of luggage to go with that. Been a while but we used to carry enough to fill the boot of a small hatchback.

Weigh 100 identical models off the production line and im willing to bet they are all different weights.

Hi Bessie - had read your previous mondeo posts on weight which in part prompted me to weigh my car. My car is 2010 BMW 320d SE Touring.   It's not particularly blessed with loads of kit and only has a factory towbar added as an option. Also no spare wheel although thinking about it does have bigger alloy wheels then standard. Might go and check it against a base model though to see if I'm missing anything. No doubt I am!

I think it does make a mockery of matching programmes though but I'm not complaining

Hi Grampian - have thought about it but not sure I understand your 85% comments.

1580 is brochure weight (normal definition ie kerbweight +90% fuel + driver)

1690 is my actual weight give or take a few kg

Cheers

I have not weighed my Mondeo, but taking Bessie's figures then remember this extra kerbweight means less available payload as the gross vehicle weight is a official plated weight.

That could be a problem with a mondeo, The gross vehicle weight and gross towing weight would exceed the gross train weight.

Heavier car would reduce your loading capacity and reduce the towing limit.

What i meant about the 85% weight is maybe its with an empty car not 90% fuel and 75kg driver + spare etc?

Can I just check my weights with you good folk

My manual says (and matching programmes all use) the following

1580kg  Kerbweight (kerbweight + 75kg + 90% fuel without optional extras)

2045kg  Permitted Gross weight

1600kg  Max Tow Weight

3645kg  Train Weight  (got this from Towsafe...is this my max train weight?)

I reckon my actual kerbweight on same basis as above is about 1690kg.  This leaves me with technically 355kg avilable for further car loading although not going to max this out.  This has to cover additional passengers, noseweight plus any other luggage.

Caravan I want to tow is 1450kg MTPLM making match 92% on car manual figure or 86% on actual figure.  Have I made any errors so far?

Then just to make things more confusing car manual has a section on weights when towing a trailer and for my model the following is different

Permitted Gross Weight 2120kg (75kg higher which coincidentally is my nose weight limit).  Still says 1600kg max tow limit.

Anyone know why it says this? and does it change my gross train weight, infact thinking about it am I breaking any train weight regs with any of this.

Sorry for long post but any advice gratefully received!

Your gross vehicle weight & gross train weight will be the larger two figures on your car's weight plate (silver plate usually in one of the front door shuts) & these are legally enforceable weights.

2120 gross + 1600 tow would put you over the 3645 maximum train weight limit.

Also if you passed your test after 1997 its over 3.5tons.

You think 355kg ia a lot, But 5 people 11 stone each and all you have left is enough for a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste each.

I wanted to take my FIL's electric scooter on holiday a while back and whilst working out the weights i thought wow i can carry 1/2 a ton.
But too much xmas treats soon put that into reality.

Someone on here posted weights for a 7 seater car a while back and the gross weight would mean you would have to have 7 fairly skinny people.

Such a minefield.

Right just look at my car's plate...not particularly clear and its black not silver!

Two biggest numbers are 2045 & 3720. So that's permitted gross weight of 2045 and gross train weight of 3720.

2045 must exclude an allowance for 75kg noseweight (hence different quoted figure in manual when towing ie 2120).

I guess this also stacks up GTW of 3720 ie 2120+1600 max tow weight.

This means previously quoted 355kgs just needs to cover additional passengers (100kgs in my case for wife and two small kids) plus any other luggage.

As a newbie to towing these weights all seems quite reasonable ie 86% tow match, passed my test before 97 and not breaking any laws etc! Anyone disagree?

Ps I know there is other stuff to consider as well for a stable outfit.

I have the 2010 320d SE Business Edition touring, and I am intrigued about your weights, I was told the BE was 1610 + 30 for the towbar = 1640. Still 50kgs from your weight.

Manual does say 1580, but that will be for the base S model mine has the full leather, satnav and the larger 16" wheels. So I always knew it was more than the book.

However as you say further down it does leave less weight for "contents"

Hi CandP - where did you get you weights from?  the dealer?

I think 1580 figure must be a standard base model with a 318d engine as well as weights are the same as the 320d.  I know the 318d is basically the same engine but there must be some uprated stuff associated with the 320d model and so some added weight.  Also I reckon the standard base model may not be the same as the base uk model spec as the 1580 is also quoted on the european whattowcar website.

My only extras are a factory fitted towbar, bluetooth phone kit and metallic paint (thats it...it will be the metallic paint!).  Do have 17inch wheels though.  With the exception of the wheels I would expect your car to weigh more in every aspect but it seems hard I to believe the wheels account for the difference though.  I suspect your car is heavier than you think.

Right need to remember to take those gold bars out of the boot tomorrow!

I think it was, but its one of those things I just cant remember where and who told me the information.

I certainly know the westfalia detachable towbar weighs 29-30kgs. However they do take a 5kg brace of the car to fit the towbar.
