Hi,

I am thinking ahead and considering a change to the family car line up next year. We currently tow with a Passat Estate and my wife has a 5dr hatchback.

I have the use of a company car which due to the business I am in - a) Gets changed every 5 minutes b) Is 'chosen' for me c) Never has a tow bar and is usually unsuitable for camping pursuits.

The Passat gets used for taking the dogs to the woods, tip runs etc etc as well as being used previously for dragging our FC and now a caravan. But it mostly stands idle on the drive polished up and ready for duties.

We have discussed getting rid of both of 'our' cars and getting a small SUV for family and towing duties. We are rurally located so something with a bit of ground clearance, bigger tyres and some tolerance to my wifes gung-ho approach to driving in the snow suddenly appeals.

I have never been a fan of Japanese or Korean vehicles - just don't like the feel and look of them, I don't have the energy to buy anything made in France, Italy or Solihull, and I'm just not keen on GM or BMW either tbh.

So blind predudice to one side - we like the look of the Tiguan, the Yeti or the Kuga and once we get a few bills behind us in the new year might start looking for 2-3 year old examples of each.

They are not too big, always been a fan of the Focus on which the Kuga is based and think the Yeti has a bit of character as well as proven underpinnings. Not sure about the Tiguan - but have enjoyed the Passat so...

Anyway, just wondered if anyone on here owns or has owned any of the above and can give some impressions of how they tow and what they are like to live with as a daily driver as we have never considered an SUV of any sort before.

Thanks in advance

Have a Yeti 170 TDi Elegance on order ... due 1st of March 2012!

So not towed with one yet but my last two cars (Octavia vRS models) have had the same 170 TDi unit so I know it is up to the job.

Although as very satisfied Skoda owners (both as towcar and second car) the Yeti was always top of the list we looked at the Kuga and Tig too.

The Kuga was ruled out as it is to be replaced next year (bargains to be had???) but it wasn't as well equipped as the Yeti nor could it beat it on power.

The Tig 170 was ruled out on price and an ugly dashboard set up ... not to mention having to make too many visits to the options list to match the Yeti's spec.

Bottom line is though it has to be what suits you,  Yeti suits me and I have had excellent service from my friendly local Skoda garage which helps keep me loyal too.

We have a Yeti 4wd diesel 2.0 140bhp, my husband tows our 2 berth swift challenger with it and is very happy with how it tows. We love the car it is a comfortable ride and very economical. The only slight downside with the Yeti is that the boot size is not large but if you are able to put one or both back seats down then that is not a problem.

Another Yeti 4x4 140bhp owner!
Had mine for 15 months and it tows our Adria really well. Very stable and no problems with nose weights.
You need to check very carefully what towing mirrors you can use.
Fuel consumption towing is around the 30 figure.
I have nearly a 100 mile commute each day, over Welsh cross country A roads and am averaging 49 to low 50's mpg.
Very comfortable to drive, with plenty of "toys"
Boot isn't huge, but is bigger and more usefully shaped than it appears.
I had a Tiguan whilst mine was in the bodyshop and basically it is a Yeti with a slightly different body. Everything else mechanically is the same, plus the boot is actually smaller because it is fully lined-out with flat plastic sides.
I test drove a Kuga........it was horrible!! Nasty cheap interior that rattled and creaked. Handling was wallowy, and interior space was poor.
