As some will have seen from my other posts we are currently looking at changing our Vectra tow car for a Nissian X-Trail. We have found a 2008 one local to us and may go ahead with the purchase tomorrow.
The X-Trail already has a tow bar fitted to it with twin sockets and what looks to my untrained eye to be an Alko Ball (stamped with ISO 50 on top and looks identical to the one on our Vectra). The only thing I noted today when test driving it is that some of the black paint on the bar assembly has started to crack and peel away and there is a small amount of rust on it. I guess for a 3year old car this can be expected but is this anything to be concerned about and should I sand it down and re-paint it if we go ahead with the purchase?
Are there any other things I should be looking at / asking in relation to the existing fitting?
Surface rust is not an issue but when you say cracks make sure they are not across the welds. The towball will have iso50 stamped on the top buy this does not mean to say it is definitely an alko long neck one.
Thanks for the advice. Will have another look tomorrow if we do go and put a deposit down. It didn't look like a weld crack, just the surface paint peeling away. I parked the x-trail next to the vectra and compared the two and the ball did look the same. Is it safer to ask them to switch the balls over as ours is only 3 months old? I take it that its just a matter of undoing the two retaining bolts and switching them over?
Just take a tape measure along and see if distance from back of towball to centre of towball is the same as a non alko is markedly shorter.I tow with kia auto but my neighbour tows with an x-trail manual which he bought new in 2003 and still has it, and pleased with it.Good luck.
Lots of towbars arrive painted only in primer and the instructions say to paint before fitting. But a bit of surface rust is no real issue apart from being unsightly
Check that it is just the towbar that is rusty and not the rear underside of the car. I looked at the perfect sorento earlier this year but on close inspection it must have been regularly dipped in the sea! Very rusty!
if you are using the alko hitch the ball itself needs to be rust free as it can contaminate the pads inside it.all towball balls are 50 mm.if there is any paint on the ball this needs to be removed for the same reason.you also need the extended neck towball if you have the alko hitch.
I recently repainted the Witter towbar on our 2007 Kia Sorento with black smooth hammerite. It was fitted when we bought the car so it was 4.5 years old. The paint was flaking off quite badly with some surface rust. Using hammerite meant that it was not necessary to remove the surface rust. As I painted it in situ it was a bit of a faff to get under the car, as I'm a big lad, but I managed it without too many bumps and scratches!!!
At the time I noticed that the towbar spec label was becoming illegible but that it gave a lower towbar weight than the one specified by Kia, ie, 100Kg rather than 140Kg. I need the additonal loading as I use a Witter towbar-mounted bike carrier. I must admit I'd assumed the towbar was rated to the car's spec.
I queried this with Witter. Their technical support was excellent and said that the towbar was rated to 150Kg and sent me 2 new stick on labels with the 140Kg weight rating on. I've stuck one of these onto the repainted towball.
Thanks everyone. In the end we have paid the deposit on a newer x-trail that doesn't have a towbar fitted at the moment........so will be ordering a new one once we have collected the car in a few weeks time.
I would recommend a towbar with 13 pin electrics they offer a lot of advantages. Although our 'van was actually made with twin electric leads I've had them combined into a 13 pin plug - no problem and had 13 pin electrics on the towbar we had fitted when we bought our Kia Sorento in 2007.
I'd add the caution to of being sure you get someone well qualified to fit the towbar. The local company we used initially was not good. He fitted twin electrics although I had asked for 13 pin, failed to get the car specific kit which turns off the rear sensors when hooked to the 'van, again I'd asked for that, and actually failed to tighten some of the towbar bolts fully!!
In the end I had the wiring redone by my usual servicing mechanic. Now it's done I do find the 13 pin electrics a big improvement on twin electrics.
Thanks for the advice Tim, How easy was it to get your van electrics converted to the 13 pin plug and what was the cost? I was going to get a 13pin socket on this towbar but our van has twin leads. My current plan was to buy a convertor lead for the sockets but I hadn't thought about getting the caravan plugs changed from twin to a 13 pin single!
It is a relatively easy job. There was room to fit the two 'van cables into the 13 pin plug. A caravan service engineer did it for free when doing some other work on the 'van. It only took him a few minutes.
I have heard of others joining the twin cables to a piece of 13 pin cable at some sort of junction box in the 'van and fitting a 13 pin socket to that cablebut our solution is cheaper and has been okay for 3+ years.
I did use a twin to 13 pin adaptor temporarily before I had the 13 pin plug fitted. It was generally okay but it made the cables rather long in total and I had to ensure that they were well secured to avoid them dragging on the ground!
Another point with 13pin wiring on the car is to make sure that the fitter uses cable with the right size cores to ensure correct charging of the 'van fridge and, in my case, correct operation of the ATC which I had retrofitted. The Westphalia 13pin wiring kit that my mechanic fitted arrived without a pin for the fridge and I had to ask the supplier to send me one out.
Cheers Tim. We will be getting the van serviced in March (its packed away in storage for the winter now) but will ask the mobile engineer we are going to use if he could do the change from 2 plugs to one. Failing that I will just get an adaptor for now and as you say will have to make sure the cables are tied up and kept off the floor!
Hoping to pick the X-Trail up in 1-2 weeks as we need to wait for our private number plate to be put on retention and the new tax disc and MOT to come through!
