We at present tow a Coiachman Oasis 2 berth  minimum weight 900 max 1120 with our Astra 1.6 automatic car.  OH has had no plroblems towing it although we do not go up hills or mountains.  Very flat in Lincolnshire and Norfolk our favourite places.  We have now bought an Avondale Dart 475/4 berth weights 895 and 1160 so are looking at changing our car to an Astra 1.8 automatic Design Estate, kerbweight 1288 and maximum load 1325 which were given to us by the garage.  However in the handbook with the car it gave kerbweight including 1 passanger and fuel as EC directive as 1370.  I have worked thie Astra Design at worst case scenario a 90% match which OH is happy to tow as he is an experienced at towing.  However before buying said Astra design Estate would appreciate any comments ordvice.  Apologies for the rather long and not very clear message.

That's 97%.
Possible but not recommended.

Thanks for reply.  How do I work it out.  I worked it as 1288 kerbweight therefore 1160 max wight of caravan as 90%.  How should I be working it out.  Max towing weight of car is 1300 kgs.

i always find if the car has horsepower of 100Bhp or more then it will pull most standard 5 berth caravans or below

I make that a maximum of 90% & work it out as you have goo2dogs. In practice you will not tow with the car at kerb weight. It will need a towbar for a start. This will improve the ratio slightly.
I have no experience with the Astra and connot comment further other than to say I prefer to use a deisel for towing.

Sorry, looked at the wrong number. Still a poor match though.

What year is the astra? What does the logbook say as max tow?   1100kg i think for the auto's

I found with most astra's the power was a lot less than say a similar ford.

1.6 = 83bhp? Thats pathetic. The engine and box will be under a lot of strain, Wont be long before the box gives up.

It would help if you said what year the Astra was first registered.

The Dart does not have to be loaded to its maximum 1160, but assuming you do using the EC directive 1370. Calculation is 1160 divided by 1370 % = 84.67%

Car handbook should give you a maximum towing weight [for braked trailer] plus max. noseweight and engine bhp.

Auto gearbox will make the car heavier than manual but it may reduce max. towing weight, what about an oil cooler for the auto box?

The Astra 1800cc engine is quite a good unit, my daughter has one.

Astra is 1.8 Design estate year 2007 (57 reg) auto.  According to manufacurers technical data  Max towing weight for braked is 1300 plus 25 for auto.  noseweight 75    Don't have handbook as just looking at car for the moment.  Never needed an oil cooler with previous Astra also an auto.  Although caravan is a 4 berth we will not be loading it with any more gear than we have our previous 2 berth.  Just wanted a bit extra room so that we can take 2 year old grandson with us next year for the odd night or two.

If we find this will not pull the Avondale safely, we will have to look at purchasing a different caras no way my OH would drive anything unsafe and no way I would take my very precious , much loved and much wanted grandson with me.

I tow roughly the same weight with a 2ltr auto c-max, which has a bit  more weight margin, but it tows quite well so you should be ok.

Have you checked the combo on the cuddles website?

You could also get a Skoda Octavia hatch or estate 1.9 tdi with a DSG auto box then you can tow up to 1400kg

Get more MPG and cheaper road tax and insurance

Go onto the auto trader web site and see whats there
