hi , i have suffered with this problem with my alko towball , i purchased a latex / rubber type full towball cover ( paid £3 from local campshop ) when the car is not towing the van ie closed season i cut a the thumb of a latex glove and then refit the cover , this has seemed to cure the problem.

do not use WD40 or geases these act as a lub which penatrates metals , to remove any suface rust clean with a scotchbrite pad or a green washing up pad and use a IPA or brake cleaner to clean as this evaporates.

hope this of help

Just to rewind on this subject, why is surface corrosion on a towball a problem so long as its cleaned off prior to hitching up ?

It would take many a year for the corrosion to affect the integrity of the ball.
