Hi folks and thanks for reading.

I'm in a bit of a quandry at the minute as to which 4x4 to replace my freelander with for towing my caravan. The van is 24" long and weighs 1400kg with a tandem axle.

I had a Frontera last year which blew up and to be honest struggled to pull the van easily. I replaced that on a temporary basis with a 3dr Freelander (no good for getting the oiks in and out) which has pulled the van to Holland and back without breaking a sweat. Far easier and better than the Fronty did anyway!

So the choices for replacing the Freelander are a Shogun DID or the Sport 2.5 and i was hoping there would be some owners on here that wouldnt mind sharing their experiences of towing with these vehicles so i can get a heads up before i start test driving some.

I'm not really fussed over reliability, fuel consumption etc as they'll all be about the same, its more how they perform when towing that i'm interested to find out more info. Pulling up hills and ease of driving etc. I will be going for a manual transmission if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance

Griff

The sport 2.5 is not as reliable as the DID.I towed my van with the DID and it will tow anything to hell and back without you knowing its there. It is thirsty but if you are prepared to suffer about 18mpg when towing its worth it.Check the gearbox is smooth and working in all low and high gears and also that it has had a full service as this can cost up to £800.Its a beast but what a beast, have a looky in my profile and you will see what i was towing with it.Auto is the way to go when towing and i dont think you can get the 3.2 in stick change.

Griff I think you should consider/try a Toyota Landcruiser 3.0 D4-D Auto. Do at least compare the LC with a Mitsi. before you buy.

I tow my 2011 swift conqueror 645 plated at 1900 kg with a swb shogun 3.2 manual. Fantastic tow car you wouldn't know van was on the back even on steep hills.

Hi folks

Thanks very much for the replies and info. The main problem i have is budget (doesnt everyone!) and looking at it again i dont think i can strech to the DID or a Landcruiser (as nice as they both are) so my other option was to maybe look at a V6 LPG Shogun Sport.

A friend of mine pulls his 28 foot Tabbert with one and has no prblems at all! Running costs are going to be much of a muchness! Let face it none of these are cheap to run!!

The way my Freelander pulls the van is fantastic but its just too small with the kids and the dog! Even swapping it for a 5 door isn't going to make much difference as they're the same body length! I also want to future proof the car as we're looking at changing the van in a year or two for a heavier one as the layout we have at the minute iis'nt suitable!

Think i'm gonna have to go play in a few and go from there!

Thanks again

Griff

if your budget is a bit tight look at a pajero I had a 1994 2.8 then a 1999 3.2 before I bought the shogun  I have now The only difference is that they are classed as "grey" imports but parts are the same as uk shoguns and insurance is not a problem .Have a look on pocuk as there is lots of info on there
