I currently have an Elddis Crusader Superstorm with an MTPLM of 1999kg. I used to tow with a 2.8 LWB Shogun but since the van has been in storage I sold my Shogun.
Now the new season is almost on us I am thinking of getting a Discovery, but have read good and bad things about them. Has anyone towed....or is towing with a Discovery and if so whats it like and is it strong enough to tow my Superstorm.

You need to join a dedicated LR forum and ask them for a check list. My sister scrapped her discovery of that era - it was completely rusted away underneath
Yes a Discovery will pull your van with no problems.
You will get plenty saying they are the best and plenty saying they are rubbish, they are just the same as any other make, get a half decent one and it will give you little trouble and you will be happy, get a thrashed poor one and it will be the worst thing you ever bought never to be repeated.
I currently have a 53 plate Td5 and am very happy with how it performs.
A friend of mine is an independant Land Rover dealer and I do a few days here and there in the workshop for him. IMHO the TD5 is the best mechanically but you must be very carefull to inspect the underneath as they are very prone to rust on the chassis. The outriggers that the body mounts to can just disappear and the chassis rusts from the inside out. If you do find a good one then i would recommend getting someone to pressure wash the chassis off then coat it with waxoyl or similar. The parts for the TD5 are fairly reasonable as there are companies such as Bearmach who make pattern parts for them. The newer discovery 3 or 4 are a fantastic machine but the repair bills are nearly always massive because of the time it takes to get to everything.
I had a Disco from new back in garage at 6 days for new transfer box and main gear box gave up at 32,000 miles.Listen for clunks when changing gear as splines on gearbox output shaft wear.My friends went at just over 40,000 and again in the 90,000s.I now have Sorento auto,my opinion it is superior.
We had a Sorento and it was ok however circumstances meant we had to hire at very short notice a car to tow our caravan to France and we got a BMX X5 the 3 Ltr engine pulled our caravan without any problems so upon our return decided to change the Sorento for something bigger and went for a Landrover 3 and yes we had a few teething problems but I have to say I like it and pulls our caravan without any effort...would love to get a newer one...
