Hi all just one question,am considering purchasing a new towcar around the £24,000 mark,is it possible to ask for a discount on this amount.I would be trading in,probably around 5-6 k and financing the rest. Not very good at haggling, but would value your opinions on this subject.Cheers John.
Yes, haggle over everything you need to buy. If you are looking at a new car have a look at What Car magazine as they list target prices showing how much you can expect to pay. Also shop around for the best p/x price and finance deals. I hardly ever pay the "proper " price for anything these days except diesel fuel which gets dearer every day.
Make sure it comes with a spare wheel (free) as part of the deal,
Look for the initial price reduction first then go for the options.
i managed to get a small price reduction and four optional extras at app £200/250 each included plus the must have spare wheel,
im sure there will be members who have got a lot more than this.
if you look at the price list for options you will also find that its a lot cheaper to have any other options fitted when ordering the car
example cruise control fitted when ordering (factory fitted) app £250, when car arives at showroom £500 for the dealer to fit
Your overall spend would be much less If you could sell your present car privately. You are in a better position with a car dealer with no trade in & the trade in price offered is generally deeply disappointing.
Discounts will depend very much on the manufacturer and model and whether the car is in stock at the dealership (and paid for by them) or is a car which needs to be ordered.
Generally I look at online brokers and print out several of their quotes - calculate the % discount on each, note the best and worst, get the average then start the haggle. If trading in I get the price first as a fixed figure no matter what you buy - then haggle using you percentages aiming for the high figure but not less than the lower one.
Selling privately is a good option if you have the time and the level you are selling I think you may get some interest but above 12k and I have found private buyers become few and far between.
I then go for other extras thrown in or at cost eg towbar, flaps, mats if not included.
My latest Audi was 12.5% off the price and a towbar at trade.
