One of the traps is a low 'new business' premium that then catches you out the next year.
What we could really do with is an honest reference list, created by drivers (no names of course), indicating model of vehicle, driver's age, actual accident/penalty free years, post code, net premium and insurance company. This might give us a bit more visibility of what we ought to be paying. Insurers are taking us for a ride at present, and it's about time we hit back.
For example, I happened to clip our caravan on the awning rail of another one on a congested M-way services parking area. T.P. claim against me came to £420. My second fault claim in 57 years (both on carparks). Although my NCB is protected, my premium jumped by £107. When insurers give a quote, they only go back 5 years, and don't consider type of accident. Good for their purposes, but bad for careful drivers who just happen to have an odd scrape.
Bertie.
