It can be a common problem and have had this myself also. It is usually caused by dirt or contamination on the internal friction pads but I managed to cure mine after advice on here. What you need is a brake and clutch cleaner which will disperse any foreign matter and fully clean the ball and pads but the best product to use is Holts as you can use it upside down which what you need to spray up and under the towing hitch. It eliminated the creaking for good and don't have this problem any more. See the link and it confirms that it can be used upside down.
