Looking at changing our car to a Grande Espace, and so need to fit a towbar to it, I am tempted to get my FIL to do this, he is a mechanic and has all the tools etc, has anyone tried this? also, if i was doing this where is the best online place to get the bits from? was looking for standard Flange fitting, we have an Alko hitch, but have an Alko Fitting on our Picasso, so was goign to just swap the new flange fitting for the Alko one to save a few pennys. Cheapest local quote for full fitting is £322 is that cheap enough not to trouble FIL?

Also, what are peoples opinions of the Espace as a towcar? it is the 2.2dci with 147 bhp (which is 57 more than the Picasso)  The Picasso copes very well, but suffers a little bit on the long journeys, am i expecting too much from the change to the Espace? it is more a case of a car has come up that we can get, and just want to check it will be as good as i hope!

The Renault's are nothing but trouble, gearboxes and electrical,s, if you want an MPV go for a VW Sharon or Ford galaxy, both use the VW engines the best of the bunch is the 130 tdi, and the quickest way of telling its the 130 job is the TDI on the badge on the back will be red

If your happy paying £322 for a towbar you can buy off the shelf and delivered to your door for under £100 then its worth it.

Only you can make that choice.

I love your wording, The picasso copes very well BUT suffers a little bit on long journey's.

To me thats not what i call copes very well :)

You could always save some money and keep the Picasso and get it chipped, that will give you 40% more tork and 30% more power and better fuel economy, you can get this done at any diesel tuning specialist for around £350 taking it from 90 bhp to around 125 bhp

We pulled our van with two 2.2dci espaces over the years Pig Farmer & they both did the job very well. The first was an R reg RXE 2.dci & the next was a 2.2dci privelege which was a lovely car, it came to us at only 6 months old & gave us no trouble at all. Both of these had flange towbars on them fitted for us by the Renault dealer.

We then went on to buy a 3.0dci Grand Espace initialle which was a fabulous car. So much so we kept the thing too long & ended up spending a lot on electrical faults during the last year we had it. This came to us with a removable towbar.

My advice to you is to put a good warranty on your Espace.

I think at the age of vehicle they are looking at its the useless car warranties that only cover parts that dont wear or break.

2.2 147bhp only made upto 2006?

In the smallprint the warranty probably exlcudes renaults of that age.

We got rid of our espace as soon as poss. When it hit 5 yrs old it was just problem after problem.
No doubting it is a really good car, comfy, versatile etc etc but the repair bills can be astonishing.

You're could be better though, we might have. Been unlucky

It's a 2004 Grande Espace Priv 2.2dci (sorry should have put that up top!)

Some good responses, and mixed too which is always good, thank you all :)

so to respond to a few;

Picasso copes, i think probably better than I expected I think, but I think i am seeing the esapce with a huge amount of space in the boot, and a bigger engine and a better match for my outfit (56%)

In terms of getting the Picasso chipped, I have considered this in the past, but couldn't persuede Mrs PF it was worth it.

as for goign for a VW/Ford - We are litterally able to get the Espace due to opportunity, FIL bought it to sell (as a trader) and our ears pricked up when we heard the details, the discount he would give us means it is litterally just in the price range.

we have currently got said Espace to test it, see how we like it - it is so much lighter to drive than the picasso, and doesn't feel as big as it's size suggests it should.

Fortunatly FIL is happy for us to wait to test it fully before making our decision, penidng MOT & particulate filter service on the Picasso might force the hand! one way or the other!

re the mechanical issues, there are definatly mixed opinions out there, and peoples main grumble is the lack of renault main dealer support - I don't normally use main dealers anyway (unless the car is new enough to warrant the cost) This car has (since FIL bought it) had a gearbox refirb, as he thought it was a bit noisy so got it fixed ready for retail, also it had had a problem with the injectors i think (which were replaced at previous owners expense) while this woudl normally ring alarm bells there are 2 thoughts on this:

a) 2 major things have gone wrong, and been repaired - so hopefully they wont come back(!)

b) FIL woudln't let us buy a car he didn't trust, (numerous other cars he has had that I have wanted he has diverted me away from)...

thanks again one and all...

Also shoudl mention that FIL is a mechanic too, and so normally our repair bills (for more complex things) are just the cost of Trade price parts + meal and a couple of bottles of Red ;)

You can get remove the dpf and get a welder to open it remove the insides and weld it back up then get the sensore deleted with a computer

See guide here, the same will apply to the Picasso, then get it chipped

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/145157-dpf-issue-sorted-at-fraction-of-the-cost-pd-170/page__p__1817324__hl__grinder+dpf__fromsearch__1#entry1817324

It still passes the MOT with absolutely no problems

Not a car i would buy if your pushing your finances, Have at least £1000 put away in case it needs urgent repairs.

If you cant do that then really think again about buying it. If yuor FIL is in the trade im sure he will get more offers.

I didn't realise you already had the Espace & know its history Pigfarmer. That being te case & with your FIL on hand to sort out any problems & he probably knows someone in the trade who can do the other awkward jobs so you sould be OK with it. Our 2.2 privelege was a lovely car, we bought it at a few monts old & only sold it because I found a 3.0dci just down the road at tidy money. I don't regret having Renaults for one minute, I do however regret hanging on to the last one for so long. Being the 3 litre it'd pull a house down & I had visions of it being here as our towcar for as long as we'd need one but it's on board computers had other costly ideas.

If you have labour for free then that will certainly be a bonus. Part of it for us, was that, for the things that went wrong, only Renault made the parts. So no discounted parts as for ford etc. every job seemed to knock onto another. The inlet manifold is made of plastic, which warps, to remove it, the fuel injectors need to be removed and in doing so there is a 50/50 chance of damaging them. This was a real nightmare for us. So many electric glitches that were random coming and going.
It was a really nice car, but for us, just too much of a worry about what would go wrong next.

If you need a towbar for the Espace give me a call or txt 07811 169961, my dad just picked up a bargain of a genuine official part number, Renault Espace towbar with the detachable neck, brand new, never fitted. Regards, Phil.

Re the Renault Espace, the early versions by Matra had a Hot Dip Galvanized platform which is a great boon at the MOT. As to VW/Audi products, I have tried very hard with these and all I can say is "Kaput Durch Teknik". One Audi 100 that I bought had a truly evil fault which I later discovered had beaten FOUR previous owners and their garages. The fuel injection system was Bosch K Jetronic which is actually a very simple and reliable analogue system. The snag was a perished O ring in the Primary Pressure Regulator but when the petrol was cold and "thick", the pump could still keep up the pressure. When the petrol was warm and "thin" after fifty or a hundred miles the injectors wouldn't spray and the car would break down. A diesel Audi 100 beat me however as it was the "difficult" Audi with the engine code AAT. IMHO very bad news. In actual fact nearly ALL modern cars are heaps of junk as they are now all Drive-By-Wire. Some have Common Rail as well. Virtually all models will have a Cam-Belt and many will have a Dual Mass Flywheel so that makes FOUR problem areas that you don't want! Curiously the Rover 825D never had any of these modern horrors.

As to diesel Renault Espaces, in my long experience ALL tend to suffer from air in the fuel and a great many go to the scrapyard for this very reason. The fuel lines have umpteen snap-action quick release connectors and IMHO these are the cause of the trouble. Each connector will have a rubber seal but the trouble is that modern DERV contains a small percentage of Bio Fuel. One can surmise that the Bio attacks the seals and causes air to be ingested. The result is extremely bad starting but for a while "jumping" with a second good battery will start the vehicle. Eventually the starter motor burns out however. I cured my MK3 by running a new fuel line all in one piece from the Tank Unit to the Primer Bulb. Although its not Rolls-Royce the amount of air getting in is so small that the car now starts OK. If done on a DIY basis this is an inexpensive repair. Starter replacement is unfortunately a job that is akin to peeling an onion and it requires plenty of tea breaks and chocolate bars to get through this awful chore. Good luck!
