Hi StevieB72  -  we were also looking at the i40 but in the same boat as you we couldn't find any towing reviews.  When we got in touch with Hyundai they just quoted the figures in the brochure.  It reads as if it would be a good tow car but the reality can often be so different and we didn't want to take the chance until we seen some reviews.  Maybe now the season has began there may be tourers using this car and we may get some reviews.   Here's hoping.   Thanks    Juls22

Hi juls22, I did receive a little bit of information from the caravan club. We are looking at changing our van later in the year and this will take the can up to 1395kg. According to CC they say this will give an 85% tow match. We really like the car and was so surprised how quiet it was compared to vauxhall insignia and Peugeot 508. We may just take the plunge !

Hi Guys,

Also after some help.

We are currently looking to upgrade from camping to caravaning and also have I40 Blue drive Style 1.7 CRDI. 136BHP

According to the caravan club when we put in a search to see what caravan we could tow I would say there are probably 80-85% of the models it comes up with either a straight NO or with cautions.

The car model (2012 year) is not listed on the caravan club site only the 2011 model. But according to my book with the car is says max towing weight 1800KG, curbweight 1648. However I have spoken with the local hyundai dealer who has basically said its one book fits all so there is a chance the data could be wrong.

We have found a twin axle van with 1450 KG fully laiden can anyone advise if my car should be acceptable. The apparent issue is the curbweight. to my addition this is at 89% but caravan club say at 99% but not sure where they get those figures from. I cannot ring caravan club as not a member (yet!) just info from our family who have taken a look.

all help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Jason

I would say take the car to a weigh bridge to get the true figure.

True weight is empty car 90% fuel then 70kg for driver and 5k luggage . once you know that then you can work out what % the outfit will be

Practical Caravan magazine tested one a few months back ... head to head with a Peugeot 508. Contact them and see if they can send you a back issue or a link online.

Sadly don't think they were impressed ... but that could be poor memory on my part.

Hi Jason, we actually have the same model as yourself that we got this year.  I have towed with it, but our van was an Avondale with MTPLM of 1250Kg.  We are now comnsidering an upgrade and are looking at vans of around 1400Kg - 1500Kg.

The CC site actually have the wrong information for Kerbweight which is why quite a few you are checking are probably coming back as a NO or with a warning.  As you have stated in your post, the kerbweight is 1648Kg.

Although our van was only 1250Kg, the car pulled it fine, motorways were not an issue and would happily pull at 60mph in 6th gear.  I would say the only issue is the initial pull away, which as you probably know, with the i40 you have to give it that little bit extra anyway.  The auto hold works absolutely fine, and the car feels very stable.

Let me know if i can be of any further help.

Steve
