Drivers were caught in a tailback of up to six miles yesterday after a caravan overturned on a major dual carriageway.

Traffic came to a standstill when the caravan, being towed by a car, tipped on to its side on the eastbound carriageway of the A14, between junctions 1 and 2 – the A508 to Market Harborough – at about 1.30pm.



A car travelling behind the caravan then crashed into the central reservation – blocking both lanes of the road.

Ambulance staff treated two casualties at the scene but no-one was taken to hospital.

A Northamptonshire police spokesman said one lane was cleared quickly allowing traffic to get moving again.

A Highways Department spokesman said both lanes were clear by 3.50pm.

The `van didn`t break up like some I`ve seen.  Would`ve thought they`d`he cleared it sooner than that . . shame though, isn`t it?  D`ya know the cause?

was actually about a mile behind this , the road was clear by about 3.00 pm , we were stood still for around an hour and half , as we passed the lady was wrapped in one of the silver keep warm blankets , the car had sustained heavy damage to the front end . It happened at the bottom of a steep incline on a dual carriage way , accelerating to fast to gain speed up the hill? who knows

I used to work as a roadside breakdown technician for about ten years assisting motorist for various breakdown clubs. this used to be a regular occcurence on the a34 southbound near east Ilsley. there are very strong cross winds that blow caravans over quite easy along with it being a steep downward hill where people would pick up speed to get up the hill the other side.I can recall on many occasions where we have had to flatpack caravans to transport them

I always knew when the caravan season had satrted when I had my first caravan in trouble on the a34

Im now a caravan myself and have been so for past two years

Be carefull how you load your caravan and make sure if your caravan is of the road during he winter months try and remove the wheels to stop tires perishing

also take extra care when you are near east ilsley on the a34
