Taking the van out for the first time for a few nights to get used to it we had a disaster pulling out of mums driveway where we keep it. its really tight onto a busy main road and we scraped the back end on the gate post. The van has come off worst pulling off the metal trim bit that goes round the edge. Its all mangled for about half a metre. Is there any place we can get replacement bit for this or should we just cut off the worst and smooth it over? Its not a brand spanking new van (thank goodness)

I don`t think you`ll have trouble getting bits for it.  A large dealer will usually have stuff going back 20 odd years.  I was sorry to hear of your prang.  Bet it won`t happen again!  I did the same on the guttering of my bungalow.  And I had loads of room!  You do have to watch the swing on the back end.  On a largeish van, it can be considerable.

Thanks for that. We got a bit of a fright! My husbands work has said we can store the van in their lock up so we hopefully wont have another problem like that again. Theres a dealer close to us so I'll give them a phone when we get back.

Thanks michael - you seem to be helping me alot today! from my water pump problem too. Theres alot we need to learn about caravanning its quite different from the folding camper. The damage done is cosmetic so Im sure once we get some new rail it will be fine and learn to be a bit more careful of the extra bulk. With the caravan going in the lock up we wont have the busy road and sharp bend at the same time to contend with.

If its any consolation, my last caravan seemed to attract damage like a magnet. When I bought it there were already a number of scrapes about the body, so I suppose there were some warning signs!
Like you I caught the tail on a post, something I had never done before or have done since. Awning poles seemed to want to connect with body at every opportunity. I reversed too far on one occasion and damaged the lower skirt. I think my best one however, was catching the guttering of a building with the full length of my awning rail. The awning rail pulled out and the guttering was demolished.
Like I said, I'm sure it was the fault of the caravan not me, as I've been damage free for at least two years.

Ha makes us feel much better - Our kids (now teenagers) roll their eyes and say "Another Anderson family holiday!" I dont know what they mean - really. We just seem to attract disaster!

I always try to be very careful when manouvering the caravan as im not that experienced at towing myself.

Being a class 2 truck driver im used to being very aware of the "Backswing" ( the swing out of the overhang behind the rear axle) and i consequently tow the caravan like i drive my lorry and take junctions extremely wide.

I suppose at least the damage dosent sound too bad, if in doubt i swear at the passengers until they get out and watch me round:)
