Hi, i have tried searching for the ratios of towing capabilities but i am terrible with figures. I was hoping some of you good people could give me a straight answer please.
My towcar is a Honda C-RV mk1 1999 i think the kerb weight is 1200kg, we are looking into buying a caravan and my wife likes a very nice Bailey senetar 7000 1994 model, i am told the caravan weighs 1200 unladen and 1400 laden.
Would you advice me to tow a caravan of this weight?
If not and i am almost sure it is a no no then i would appreciate if someone could advice what the max i could tow please.
Sorry to ask a dumb question but like i said i am hopeless at working this sort of think out but the safety of my family is paramount. Thank you

If the figures you have given are correct then definately no. 1200kg does seem very light for a CR-V though. According to whattowcar.com the Mk1 CR-V is 1430kg, but that is still a long way from perfect.

Thanks for the reply, you are right the kerb weight is 1429kg, my mistake, so am I correct in saying that the maximum I can safely tow is about 1100kg.

The Bailey caravan your considering is to heavy for your particular model of CRV as it nearly 100% towing match and another issue with the CRV Mk1s is the very low nose weight limit of 60kg .
All CRV's up to 2004 have a 60kg limit and from 2005 there all uprated to 100kg

You haven't stated if the CR-V is your vehicle is a petrol or diesel version because there is quite a difference in the kerbweights. The diesel kerbweight is around 1630 kgs. so that would give you about an outfit match of 86% which is satisfactory.

My CR-V is a petrol version unfortunately, luckily we have not yet purchased a caravan, so would i be ok to tow one that weighs 1200kg? There are 5 of us so we need to find the largest Caravan we can safely get away with. Our budget for the caravan is a miserable £1400

1200kg will be fine if that's the loaded weight of your van but as I pointed out earlier the CRVs up to 2004 have a low noseweight limit of 60kg which could limit your choice of van

So if the kerbweight of your vehicle is 1200 kgs. then an 85% match would be a caravan with a laden weight of around 1020 kgs. which the caravan you mention is too heavy even at the unladen weight alone would be around 116% match. To tow a caravan with a laden weight of 1400 kgs. you would need a vehicle with a kerbweight of around 1650 kgs. which would then achieve around the 85% match.

The OP's honda has kerbweight of 1429kg so a van with a max loaded weight of around 1200kg will be around an 85% match

Take your honda to a weigh bridge it might actually weigh a lot more than you think.

You need to weigh the car empty with 90% fuel then and 75KG for driver, this will give you your true weight. you never know it maybe ok for the van your looking at.

My car comes in at more than 100 kgs than the brochure weight. The higher the car spec the heavier it is
