I've towed on and off for the last six years with a Range Rover 4.6. Very stable once I'd changed the worn out shock absorbers. Never had a problem reliability wise.
I would advise you test drive a 2.5 diesel with a caravan attached if possible as they are known in standard form to be a little sluggish.
Have a look at this site-it's very good if you are not easily offended!

Do yourself a favour as you have been looking at old discos and now a slug of a RR.
Look at either a Shogun/Pajero in your price range or a Grand Cherokee.
I am all for buying British until it comes to anything Landrover which requires a mechanic to follow you everywhere along with an understanding bank manager.
------------- Albino, Can"t say fairer than that !
It will be very slowwwwwww! For a short period in my life I worked at a LR main dealer. I can remember driving a P38 diesel for the very first time - it would hardly move. I'm with Scar on this one, find yourself a Shogun for the same money; no not quite as luxurios or refind but a much better bet for an older tow vehicle.

The BMW diesel used in the P38 is not the most capable performer in a 2tons+ vehicle, it is only about 135bhp, while the 4.0 V8 is 187bhp.
Pajero's are great until the injection pump goes south, THEN you will need that understanding Bank Manager.
A properly looked after Land Rover is quite reliable, the problem is that most on the secondhand market are high mileage and have not been looked after in their later years. People use them until they start to need major servicing or repairs and then ditch them.
Get on top of the maintenance and enjoy! We run a 4.0 V8 Discovery 2 and we very much enjoy the vehicle. Yes it has its issues, but it is a very good vehicle to maintain, spares are cheap and information such as the full workshop manuals are available on the internet.
We run ours on LPG which makes a huge difference to the running costs.

Get yourself a manual td5.
But make sure it has had the head changed, dual-mass flywheel replaced and oily injector loom replaced.
They are a good engine when running, but so many LR forum problem posts are for the TD5 and its problems that I'd never buy one, and I'm a diesel fitter.
