Hi Guys
posting on behalf of mates
they have a 2009 Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 Exclusiv
They have an Abi Award Daystar 2 Berth
the towing thing on caravan and camping club site says the van is too heavey for the car but the weight of the caravan is 909kg and as far as i knew you could take up to 85% of the weight of the car
can you please help us understand
thanks
As Grampian say's the some VX Zafira's have very limited towing capacity , your model being one of them
If it had been the 1.9 cdti 120/150 bhp model they have a higher towing limit but the 1.6 is underpowered .
If you exceed the limit of your car your insurance may be void and your leaving yourself open to possible prosecution so a change of car is required I'm afraid
we had a 2.0 dti Zafira and we towed our 2 berth van with it but this was a diesel and was just within the cars limit, I don't think I'd like to tow anything with a 1.6 as we found the 1.6 we had very sluggish. Just checked on cuddles on your max towing weight is 1000kg so if your mtplm is 1200kg as Grampian is suggesting then it is in fact 200kg too heavy

Hey guys :)
I'm the friend that Mik+Lynette are talking about.
We have inherited the caravan from my father in law who sadly passed away recently. We just changed our car 7 weeks ago and at that time didn't know we'd ever be towing a caravan.
The caravan club say it's not a match but TowCar say it is, We are so confused...mind you it don't take much to confuse me!
Our Zafira is a 2009 1.6 exclusive
The gross train weight is 3100kg
Brake horse power is 77kw
And kerb weight is 1505 without air con or 1520 with air con
The caravan's laden weight is 1200kg It's a 1997 model
Any help is appreciated as our heads a nipping with all the numbers and websites

Your Zafira 1.6 has maximum towing capacity of 1000kg (1 ton ) you cannot tow above this figure as your insurance may be void and your leaving yourself open to prosecution added to the fact a 1.6 petrol is not very powerful (77kw) so a change of car is needed if you want to tow anything heavier than 1 ton
The Caravan clubs figure are correct , have also checked on Here
The towcar website probably doesnt know the towing limit for your car is that low.
Thats why the figures on the internet are not to be trusted.
OK for guidelines, But needs to be confirmed by yourself.
Its just too heavy for your car, Even loaded with just the basic essentials its probably still over your cars legal limit.
If you get pulled you wont be able to continue your journey.
Points on your licence and a fine also. On top of the recovery costs. Then increased car insurance premiums etc etc etc...
Its not worth the risk. Even though it comes out under the 85% recommended weight its still an illegal match.
We had a vauxhall Zafira 1.8 Auto and a 1998 Bailey Ranger 460/2 and car towed it with ease but it was heavy on petrol so that when i brought a diesel and never look back ...
