after some info if possible i have a landrover disco 2 but want to change my tow car for a kia sorento or mondeo 2.0 ctdi also going to upgrade my van to a weight of around 1500 any sugestions as i know the landy will pull anything in reason but fuel costs are a issue and repairs as she is getting on a bit .
1500kg with a mondeo would be close to 100%. Personally it would be too heavy for me.
Also the gross towing weight 1800kg is with a driver only.
Extra passengers and luggage reduce the max tow weight because the gross train weight is less than the combined cars gross weight and max tow weight.
Sorento maybe slightly better on fuel, But will it have the spares backup of the landrover? Figures suggest 3 or 4mpg better.
What age Mondeo or Kia are you looking at? Not sure you will get much better economy with a pre 2010 Kia.
I tow a 1480kg mtplm Bailey with our mk IV (2007+) Mondeo 2.0 TDCi hatch with no issues. With no untoward weather conditions I get around 27/28 mpg towing, a bit less if i have 3 bikes on the roof. I get high 40s mpg solo driving.
Thanks for the reply at the moment I have a Avondale 1300 mtplm also the mondeo would be 06 plate also the Kia would be a 2005 model the fuel consumption with a kia is not much diffence to the landy I will have before the landy I had a saloon c220 merc when towing this car felt unstable that's why I went for the landy so need something sterdy

hope this helps it is a mondeo estate 2006 2.0 edge tdci 5d 130 bhp only looking at this because the mpg is good when not towing as well, also i have seen a few cars towing large caravans with this vehicle but i think they are over the 85% rule not to sure .
The 85% is not a rule it's a guideline the CC recommend especially for new towers, I try and keep to as near that as I can, but if you are an experienced tower you can go over that, our last van we towed was 89% and was happy with that as it was a very stable tow, we are looking at another van ATM, which we would ( until we get a new tow car next year) be towing again at that weight.
Sorry I can't help with the mondeo Kia comparison we tow with a td4 freelander, so can't comment on the above cars.

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
i think the problem is that i have been used to towing with the landrover discovery and had no issues with it.the only problem was going to cornwall on those steep hills is a bind very slow but most of the time i don't even no its there when we are towing.i just need something different as the landy is getting on a bit now.

I tow a 1450kg hymer with my 55 plate Mondeo tdci 115 and it is absolutely superb, extremely stable ( more so than any othe car I have towed with in 20 years Including several large 4x4s ). It is significantly economical towing at 50 mph I return 35 mpg, at 60 about 30 mpg. Solo at 60 on the motorway returns 60mpg and at 70 55mpg.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
We have a 59 reg Sorento, it pulls our Bailey (Max 1400kg) effortlessly. Seen plenty of them pulling twin axles. Its our second Sorento.
They are reliable, not had to buy any parts other than service stuff which the dealer keeps. Our last one had a couple of things replaced under warranty, the dealer got the spares quickly.
The facelift model (06 I think) has more power 168bhp and lots of torque, but apparantly you can get a powerbox for earlier ones which greatly improves the oomph.
Ther is plenty of info on the UK Sorento forum.
Obviously not as economical as a Mondeo!

well said dave, but don't forget that those boxes can invalidate your insurance.
