After a long time of thinking, Im loking at getting a Landrover Defender, long wheelbase station wagon.
Trouble is, most of those in my price range are 12 seaters, now my licence (B+E) only permits up to 8 Passenger seats.
To keep 12 seats, would require a D+E for me to tow with too.
Simple (possibly) question, is to reduce the number of seats, is it enough just to have the number on the V5 changed, and not carry those extra ones, or not?
The later S/W have only 4 single seats in the "boot", so those plus the 3 mid row and one front row are 8 passenger seats.

If its just private use, you can drive it on a B, or B+E with trailer.
Category D is for Passenger Carrying Vehicles (Hire or Reward etc).

but as I read it catagory B is
"Motor vehicles with a MAM of up to 3,500 kg, no more than eight passenger seats, with or without a trailer"
I might have to give DVLA a ring, because even with the info on here I'm confused.

Did you pass your test before Jan 97?
If so you will have a cat B with a default cat D1 with a 101 (Not for Hire or Reward) restriction.
The full D1 and D are for PCV's, not private cars.

Here found a useful LINK
"If you had entitlement to drive cars prior to 1 January 1997 – shown as group A (B for automatics) on an old style licence or as category B and D1 not for hire or reward on a new style licence – you can drive a minibus provided:
■ You are 21 or over, the minibus has
a maximum of 17 seats including the driver’s and is not being used for hire or reward."

You cannot drive anything with more than 8 seats on category B,private or not.
You will need category D1 to drive it with 12 seats and D1+E to tow a caravan with it

no, I passed in 98, and did the B+E test for my current outfit.
that was my reading of it Mr Muffin, hence my original question of reducing the number of seats on the V5 to 8 passenger seats, the V5 of original landy S/W has 11 on it (6 in the boot, 3 mid row, 2 front)
some have no middle front, so its 10, newer models have 4 individual seats, to reduce the number of passenger seats to 8 for this reason.

It is not a case of just taking the seats out and applying for a new V5. The vehicle will need to be inspected by VOSA first, then the catagory can be changed.
