I have an 09 plate Sorento which is rock solid in all situations, I am considering buying one of the new Sorento's, but have heard stories about then not being as stable as the old model. I have also read write ups in magazines saying similar things. Does any-one have first hand experience of towing with the new Sorento. I am towing around 1680 kgs.

Can't understand why they changed the Sorento other than the green issue, it was a leading tow car at one time we love our old model it would pull a train but not sure we would ever have one of the new ones.
Happy with mine. But the automatic only has a nose weight limit of 80 kgs. (can be difficult) Very stable with 1500kg van on the back. Love the automatic foot-brake release on hill starts (no roll-back) The "hand brake" takes a bit of getting used to as it's up high in the foot well and you need to remember you haven't released the "handbrake". Optional (on or off) 4WD. is ideal for mud, loose gravel drives and the occasional snow drift when you need it. It cuts out of 4wd when you get over 19mph. Fuel 22mpg towing, 36mpg normally. The Santa Fe do a 5 seater so it's storage might be better than taken-up by 7 seats.
I have the old model auto and is the best towcar i have had in 40 years caravanning (better than the discovery i had before it).The new model is not in the same league, several people on other forums have regretted, the change. On one forum a person has one about 12 weeks old and has a similar weight van and states it is like driving a blancmange at over 50 mph.He has considered changing it but will take a hit of £6,000.
It may be worth a closer look at the kerb weights if you are towing 1680kg as the new models are a lot lighter than the one you have.
I have a 10 plate Santa Fe 7 seater and the 85% business = 1667kg
Couldn't stretch finances further than the base Sorento (KX1) but even without self levelling system (SLS) we are really happy with the stability with a 1500kg outfit. Regards the new Sante fe we had one alongside in France and I was quite taken with it's appearance and as I said ONLY five seats. Apparently this is what the owner wanted AND having tried stuffing articles under the 6th & 7th seats in mine and having the items CRUSHED when I folded the seats down I wished that I'd chosen a 5 seat version. Only once have we needed a 6th seat and then our small adult found it pretty claustrophobic. If we get great grand children I might change my mind.
Thanks for your feed back everyone. I thought long and hard and have been so pleased with my 09 Sorento, that I decided on another Sorento. I have also been pleased with the Kia dealer. It was a hard decision, only time will tell. We have been away solo this week-end to run it in for our first caravan tow next week. I ahve been amazed at the fuel consumption, travelled back from Henly about 130 miles, and have been taking it steady on the motor way (65 max). I have averaged 45 mpg, which to me is really good. In this calculation was about 30 miles non motorway driving.
I have heard so many mixed reactions regarding towing,I will have to see what it is like next week-end. I will be pulling just about 85 %. Watch this space.
