Hi we are traveling down from Durham to Pentewan Sands in August and are stopping off overnight near Exeter.
Anyone have a idea of what will be the best way to go from Exeter leaving say 9am, either the A30 (as per autoroute recommendation)or is the A38 although maybe longer will this be less traffic at this time of the year
I would say A30 is easier, also there is a massive tesco 1 mile behind exeter services which is 10p cheaper a litre for fuel and good cooked breakfast available for a 3rd of the price. The car park is huge and i put the van in the overflow carpark no problem at all.
if you are travelling overnight friday expect queues at bristol then saturday at the end of the dual carriageway at temple before bodmin.I you are on the way back and hit the queue before bodmin it is worth considering the A38
We go to Pentewan several times a season & we always go via the A30. Having said that, we're always through a lot earlier than you plan going. We also travel home on Friday evenings to avoid the traffic queue at Temple on Bodmin. That one short section of single carriageway is the only stumbling block on the A30.
We will be traveling down on the Friday and thought be best to stop around Exeter overnight then only have a short hop down to Pentewan on the Sat albeit the roads could be busy after 9am.Coming back we intend to leave on the Friday and do the job in go.
i live in devon and know the a30 and a38 well..and i can tell you which ever way you go there both under water....ha ha...no its sunny outside right now....enjoy your holiday

We used to leave Northants at about 9pm on a Friday night, get the other side of the Tamar Bridge and then pull in at a little Council layby near to the St Germans turn-off for the night.
It's not signposted but lays on the left just out of sight. If you turn off left on the B3249, it is immediately on your right. Large enough to drive round in if you have a small van.
You can see it on Google maps, which incorrectly shows the junction as a triangle, the layby being the other leg.
