Hi
Would anyone be able to advise us on the best services to stop at with our caravan around sleaford/king's Lynn. Our route is A15/A17/A47 and we have no sat nav. We have children with us and therefore we will need somewhere to stop.
Many thanks.

I think if I was towing I would tend to go A1 to Peterborough and A47 all the way to Norwich. Services at Grantham and the Extra services at Peterborough as both easy access from A1 and the Peterborough one while slightly past the A47 junction is easy to get back on route via S side of Peterborough across to Eye to pick up A47. There used to be a Little Chef type place as you approach Kings Lynn but I think that has closed like a lot of them. On A47 there are a few roadside cafes of varying quality plus the usual fast food places just E of Peterborough but I think you would probably struggle if towing unless you find a truck stop.

There is a good lay by with a take away, toilets and picnic tables on the right hand side of the A17 just past Heckington which is east of Sleaford.

As you go past Heckington get the kids to look out for the windmill on the right hand side in the distance,it is the only 8 sail windmill in the uk

I used to do the journey quite often from Humber Bridge to Kings Lynn. Only ever used A15 once and never again as it was so slow and loads of farm traffic. If I was in a relaxed mood and the weather was decent I went Caistor, Horncastle, Conningsby, Swineshead and on to A17 towards Kings Lynn. If weather was not so great or it was harvest time I would go M180 A1 A47 and while it was considerably further the fuel consumption was little different.

There is a reasonable size petrol station with food outlet at the A15 / A17 roundabout.

Towing through Lincoln on the A15 is not great, with numerous junctions & bends.  It easy to make a wrong turning & turning a car & caravan round is not easy!!!

Even though it is further you can go round the Lincoln bypass then the A46 to Newark & pick the A17 up there. Much better roads, the A46 from the Bypass to the A17 junction is all dual carriageway.

The a15/17 junction is at Sutterton, a little further down the a17 on the left is a cafe with a big lay by, just before the Fosdyke bridge, further on still not far from Holbeach is a large cafe come truck stop, there are some road works taking place near this point at the moment so you may get held up if travelling in the next two weeks.

This is a regular journey we make as we have friends and relatives who live around the Broads area, and always go via the A1 then the A47. there are plenty of good lay-byes along the route, many with catering vans installed. the A17 is often plagued by slow moving agricultural traffic, and is also more winding and a slower route in general.

One word of advice is to keep out of the service areas where the McDonalds are situated along the route of the A47, the carparks are very small and tight, and not suitable for caravans, its a case of turning around in a carpark space and exiting the same way as you came in (unless you go through the drive in), which from experiance watching others who have entered whilst towing has resulted in de-hitching and swinging the caravan around manually, whist other drivers are held up and waiting for the blockage to clear.

Yeah, the Heckington laybye is good, we do this route to Norwich a lot and always stop off for a cuppa and a break here.

There is a farm shop / cafe at Fleet Hargate ( i think that is what it is called) before you get to Sutton Bridge which has a good size car park and it is on the correct side of the road for traveling down. I have done this road the last 2 summers during school holidays and admittedly it is a steady run but I have not had any hold ups to the point of causing a problem. I don't find towing through Lincoln a problem either, Sleaford is well signposted.
