I have just bought a 5x4 foot trailer for my camping gear do I need any sort of insurance while towing the trailer.

No, your car one covers it, and you dont need to inform the insurance

You may want to cover the trailer itself, plus contents, which is not covered by the car insurance.

Sorry but your car insurance does NOT cover the trailer !!

The only cover you would have under your motor policy would be under the Liability to Third Parties section.

If you want cover for damage to or loss of the trailer then toy need to take out separate insurance

No you would need searate insurance for it.

I have never bothered insuring my trailers.

If the accident or incident is your fault then it wont be covered on your car policy. If its a 3rd party's fault and they are insured you can claim from them for repair or replacement.

You need to tell your insurance if you have put on a towbar too as this counts as a modification unless it was put on when the car was made!
