Hi All,

I have just bought a Conway Tardis folding camper through ebay and can't wait to go and pick it up!

I booked my car in for Monday to have the bar fit and informed my company. I was informed by them I would need to get the camper covered which I did, however they say I need to have it covered for being towed as their insurance won't cover it.

I can't seem to find any insurances that will cover me whilst towing it, plus I'm limited with which companies I can go with due to the age of the camper (26 years).

Any advice welcome, help please I'm panicking!
Thanks in advance.

Andy.

I think you should get in touch with your firms' insurance provider and explain the situation.
As you're covered for leisure (holiday) use and the camper is insured separately, it's only the car to be done. Most insurance companies will only be needed to be notified that you're towing (with no extra cost).

I came into this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

The transport department are being quite evasive, this is the email response I got from them when I tried to apply pressure:-

No, you are covered to drive a company car but our insurance doesn’t cover you to tow a trailer/caravan so you need to be insured to tow a trailer in case of accident or damage to the car. You are insuring the trailer/caravan not the vehicle.

I can try them again on Monday, I will have to cancel my towbar fitting now I guess (was due to be done Monday), until I get this sorted.

If have read that right. One sentence says you need to be insured to tow in case of damage to the car! Other says you are insuring the caravan not the car doesn't make sense.

Do they think you want the caravan / trailer insured rather than just being covered incase who outfit causes damage to 3rd party ?

I thought most insurance companies cover trailer /caravans for 3rd party liability.

Be interested to know your companies response.

I had this when I had a company car

I insured the caravan for 3rd party risks including any damage to towing car (sureterm Direct do this I think)

It is not unusual, fleet insurance is pretty cut-throat and any savings on a simple thing like towing cover can add up to mega-bucks over a fleet, plus a lot of leased cars have towing restrictions on them from day one.

I suspect your employers are trying to dissuade you from towing.

There is only one way to see if you are covered or not --  Look at the Motor Insurance Certificate.  If it does not exclude "Towing a caravan" then it is covered whatever your employers say.

I hope Sureterm can sort me out (everywhere else I'm looking I'm hitting a dead end).

Worst case scenario I could get a towbar fit to the wifes Beetle but would prefer to avoid that option if at all possible.

I would check with your company if it is permissible to fit a tow bar as the car may be on a lease, and it is quite possible it is the leasing company which will not permit the car being used for towing purposes.

The majority of the fleet are on lease, however my car was gained through an aquisition and is one of the few "owned" cars in the fleet.

Still won't insure me to tow, so unless Sureterm can sort me out I will be requesting to come out of the company car scheme and go back to purchasing my own, something they aren't keen on.

Sureterm stopped insuring caravans 4 weeks ago according to their member of staff I just spoke with.

Have batted it back to my company,if they can't sort something then they will have to allow me to go back to personal car.

Good point, they haven't completely removed the link so it may be a temporary thing.

Booked the wifes Beetle in for tow bar fitting tomorrow, didn't want to go down that route but needs must!

There is still some misunderstanding here, I think.

1)  The insurance you have personnally taken out for your Coway will cover the trailer for whatever risks you have insured it for ( usually accidental damage ) whether or not you are actually towing the trailer.  If this is not the case then I suggest you change insurers.

2) Your concern seems to be with your employer's motor insurers.  I know of no insurer who excludes towing such a trailer but the only way to check is to read the Motor Insurance Certificate.  ( It will be mentioned under either "Limitations as to use" or "The policy does not cover" about halfway down the certificate )  If it is not specifically excluded then Road Traffic Act cover will apply whatever your employer says.

3) Similarly I know of no insurer who will provide Road Traffic Act cover on a trailer alone.

Whether or not your employer allows you to fit a tow-bar is another matter and nothing to do with insurance.

Dave, I am fairly new to all this and am sure you are far more knowledgable about this kind of insurance than I am. However, I went through around 20 different insurers over the weekend and every one of them had an exclusion for cover when the caravan was attached to a propelled vehicle.

I work for a small company within a much larger group and the feedback I was getting from transport was that towing was excluded from their policy, which is why they wanted to see proof I had some form of insurance to cover damage to "their car".

Being the group they are they are normally fairly head on and honest, not ones to mince their words.

They were quite happy for me to go ahead and fit the bar, but didn't want the trailer hooking up until insured.

Wish I had investigated all of this a few weeks ago rather than waiting until I actually bought one, my own fault really.

I might ask for a copy of the insurance for future reference, but seeing as I was contemplating going back to buying my own car and claiming a car allowance this will add the weight I need to my argument.

Thanks for your input, it is much appreciated.
