I have done a bit of camping but as me and she are heading towards an early retirement in the next year or two ( currently 54 & 51) we thought we might like to tour europe.

I currently have a Land Rover Defender 90 300 TDi 1997 on an R plate, which I love and keep it regularly serviced.  We intended to use this, will this be hit by a huge tax hike soon, I read somewhere on here about tax increases?  Should I do a towing course? My licence is from 1977 will I have to take a test.  Sorry for all the questions but as ever I have always found this site useful for most advice. There will be more questions I'm sure. Thanks in advance.

So far the VED is only been increased in line with inflation in 2012 and if your in the 400+ bracket you will be able to pay it monthly (damn good of them)

Only licences after 1997 (i think) carry weight restrictions

 if you are not confidant at towing a course is always a good idea

What are you thinking about towing?

Roy, you have a great advantage of your car being registered before 1st March 2001, therefore paying road tax based on the engine size rather than the emissions.

From 1st April you should be paying £220 per year for road rax.

My Suzuki Grand Vitara 1600 was registered April 2001 so unfortunately goes by emissions (193) so I have to pay £250 for it and cannot get rid of the cat, like you can on the Defender.

I am looking at changing my Suzuki for an older Discovery 300tdi (possibly) as we need the extra room again for the camping stuff and the parts for the Disco are a lot cheaper than the Suzuki. I can get a full exhaust system for a Disco 300tdi for the price of a back box on the Suzuki.

Hi Geoff or Emmy, I would be thinking of towing a 4 berth caravan, some reasonable looking ones on the market for between 2 & 3K Thanks

 

I will do the course  as I'm sure it will be useful.

Currently, I get about 28mpg in the landy will this drop much with the towing?
