One for all the Disco owners.
Where do you get your spares from?
I have always used Paddocks or if I'm in a hurry and can't wait for delivery local firms like Landranger or McDonnald.
The thing lately I have found with all of these three is they seem to rely more and more on Britpart for their parts.Now Britpart are a Marmite amongst many owners and I'm beginning to fall into the rhyming slang name for them camp,not least as the latest Britpart to fail on me is only a couple of years old.
So are there any decent online spares to be had or is every one dealing with Britpart and the alternative is stumping up main dealer prices?
At one time non genuine parts were cheap and you could replace two maybe three times before getting to the cost of main dealers genuine parts but now the price gap is closer and I'm thinking genuine parts seem to go on for a lot longer so is there really a saving?

Have a look at lrparts.net
Land Rover Supermarket Liverpool Merseyside L42 9HB.
I used them for all my parts, i used to call in because i lived not far away and it is just like a food supermarket you walk around picking the parts off the shelves yourself and then take them to the till.
i used to spend ages just walking round looking at all the spares.
Have not been for a few years so i hope it has not changed, if you like landrovers you will love this place.
service kit for 300 tdi £7.50 +vat cheap or what

We get most parts from Marshalls at Bedford, we get next day van delivery and trade discount. Many parts can actually be cheaper from a dealer than buying from ebay.

Otherwise, any of the 2nd tier suppliers, Paddocks, LRSeries, John Craddock etc.

They mostly offer genuine OR pattern parts, which to be fair is not a bad deal as you have a choice then of cheap and cheerful or full retail Land Rover.

If you're only paying £12 for something that is £80 from Land Rover, where's the problem?

One tip: DON'T buy gasket sets from any of the 2nd Tier suppliers, go to a motor factors and get a Victor Reintz gasket set. They are not cheap, but much better quality and fit than what comes from Britpart, or Sh*tpart as our boys call them.

We bought 2 gasket sets from Island4X4 recently, they are sourced through Britpart probably, but the head gaskets were not marked for 'Top' and the valve stem seals were wrong. I couldn't get a response out of the vendor over the matter, so we binned the gasket sets and bought Reintz instead, much better quality and everything fitted.

So long as it lasts proportionally as long as the saving then no problem,so in your example that would mean roughly a sixth of the mileage the genuine part would do to be an economical repair.
In the case of this last part it has done less than a quarter of the mileage of the originals but didn't cost four times less.
I appreciate everyone has a budget and for some the £12 "get me back on the road" part is the preferred option but if you are constantly replacing the "cheap" part when the "expensive" part just keeps going where is your saving?

OK, bit more detail:

TVC100010 Prop-shaft Universal Joint, greaseable.

Land Rover Retail: £60.03
Branded Hardy-Spicer: £18.90
Unbranded £7.87
Ebay:     £3.99

All plus VAT and postage/delivery.

In all cases where I have bought an OEM part, I have had no in-service issues. You have to look at a part and decide if it is worth the extra money for the Land Rover genuine part, or buy the pattern part at much less cost.

Another example:

ERR3440 Auxiliary Belt Tensioner:

Genuine Land Rover: £86.00
Allmakes/Britpart:   £44.19
Ebay (Genuine Dayco Boxed) £14.99

All plus VAT and postage/delivery

What I'm trying to say is that you can be selective about the source and pay accordingly. I wouldn't use Britpart brake parts, but have bought OEM discs and Mintex pads, which have lasted 48k miles with no issues at all.

I have used Island 4x4 for parts for my Land Rover - pretty good value and postage is quick.

I totally agree with you Listerdiesel. You pay your money and you take your chance.The "problem" I have is when the cheaper parts don't perform on a level to their cost.If something costs half as much I expect it to last half as long at the least.In my case it lasted less than quarter the mileage but that performance wasn't reflecting in the purchase cost.
I was just asking the question are you actually any better off buying pattern parts in the long run.
Your UJ pricing for example, the £3.99 Ebay "bargain",common sense says it is going to be poor quality and is probably going to want replacing inside six months, whereas the "expensive" £60.03 genuine part will probably last six years.By the time you have bought six years worth off Ebay and had the cost of the repair or the inconvenience if DIYing then the genuine part is not as "expensive" as it first seemed.Even the keenly priced Branded Hardy Spicer I would wager would need replacing twice in that time and a third time just a few thousand miles more than the genuine part.By the time you replace the genuine part again I reckon you would be on your sixth Hardy Spicer.Realistically I suppose the vehicle would have been changed by then anyway and it would be someone else's wallet but it does beg the question are genuine parts actually that expensive when they last so many more miles and you get reliable motoring? I would still prefer not fork out the cost though!

As I said, Phil, I have had no issues with any of the non-genuine parts I have bought, the most critical of which were the new water pump and thermostat we put in when we fitted a short engine in 2009. They have done 3 years/48k miles.

The other thing to remember is that most of these parts are not made by Land Rover anyway, Valeo make a lot of the car electronics, Bosch do the engine management, Dayco make the aux drive belt, tensioner and idlers and so on.

Nobody is going to set up a production line for Land Rover V8 water pumps just for the aftermarket business, and there are plenty of known instances of Land Rover supplying parts in Britpart packets, so there is every reason to believe that most aftermarket OEM parts originate in the same factories as genuine LR stuff.

The only exceptions to most of this are things like MAF sensors, which are cheaper from Land Rover than some ebay vendors, and brake calipers and cylinders. I'd always buy genuine.

Regarding the universal joints, Chinese production quality is now recognised as being as good as western manufacturers, especially the very large OEM suppliers who are supplying the motor companies in the USA and Europe direct.
