I would suggest when you get your golf take it to a weigh bridge and and weigh it.
weigh it with 90% fuel and the rest of the car empty (with your towbar fitted as this will weigh an good few kilos) once you have the figure add 70 kg for driver and 5 kg for load. if it comes out at i.e 1400kg then thats the weight you can tow up to, yes as a new tower you are advised to stay around 85% but since your husband has a professional driving licence he should be ok up to 100%. the 85% rules was brought out many years ago when cars were pretty crap, poor engines, brakes,suspension ect ect now days cars are much better and stronger.
The brochure % match for my car is 96% most people would run a mile from that the actual match is 87% as per shell's weigh bridge, the higher the spec of car the more toys = more weight
