I drive an older kia sedonna(my second) and am not looking to change anytime soon. my problem is we tow an eldiss avante 636 which when on the level is lower than my tow bar. my jockey wheel doesn't always extend to give me the height I need to hitch /unhitch and it is a real pain having to use the steadies or blocks to get the extra height. It is really starting to put me off using the caravan as it can add an extra half or or more if the jockey wheel comes out and needs to be put back together, not to mention the mess. Is there a special kind of jockey wheel for higher cars like mine or can anyone recommend a good telescopic one which would solve the problem. thanks in anticipation.

Your tow bar seems to have been fitted at the wrong height.  The correct height should be 350-420mm with vehicle fully laden.

Are you unclamping the wheel and then lowering it down?

Or just using the winder on the top?

Unclamp it. Drop it as low as it goesthen wind it up as high as it will go.

You should be able to get it high enough for a raised 4x4.

Had no issues when i have to move my van with a range rover that had a 4 inch lift on it.

The height of your car is immaterial, it is the height of the tow-ball that matters. The tow-ball will have been fixed at a standard height.

I would think that Grampian91 has got the answer and you should drop the jockey wheel by undoing the clamp and then winding it down further

cheers for that .just using the winder on top until it basically stops moving or falls off. will try this and see if it helps. The towbar is a witter and was fitted by a registered fitter so I 'm guessing the height is right. Are all jockey wheels telescopic and would this make a difference?

When you hitch up you unclamp the jockey wheel and raise it as high as possible.

When you unhitch, You unclamp it and drop it to the floor.. Then use the winder to raise it the extra couple of inches needed to unhitch it. It then stays in that position ready for hitching next time.

I did wonder if you knew that. I think when i bought my 1st van the dealer did that when he hitched mine up.
So always did the same.

Hello KarenMcmillan.

It might be best if you ask a fellow caravanner how to do it when you are next on site because describing what to do is difficult !!

When you arrive on site and want to unhitch:-

1)  Unplug the electric leads and detach the breakaway cable

2) Apply the handbrake ensuring that it fully on

3) Slacken off the clamp which is on the SIDE of the tube containg the jocket wheel and allow the wheel to drop down onto the ground.  When it is on the ground re-tighten the clamp.

4) Only now should you turn the handle on the TOP of the tube and at the same time raise the lever on the hitch allowing the caravan to rise off of the tow-ball.

Once the car is moved out of the way you can then use the handle on TOP of the jockey wheel to level the caravan.

Good luck

One thing about the handbrake.

When you pull it up like a car one and its say 45 degrees, Thats NOT fully applied.

It will stop the van rolling forward if the brakes are decent. But it wont stop it rolling backwards.

The auto reverse brakes will allow it to go backwards.

You need to pull the lever up to 90 degrees.

I didnt know that for many years of caravanning.

Thanks about the 90deg. as I just found out for the first time and we are due to get our caravan on Wednesday. I know my Bob knows but I like to know these things also as I may have to be the one that does it one day.

I already know about the safety chain that is not only vital but has been an asset to us when we had the esteral to stop a bad accident from happening. Always renew one that has broken, always put it on before travel.

To be pedantic, if you did it that way on the towing test, you'd fail. You should not undo the breakaway cable until AFTER the brake is applied.

No, you are not being pedantic, LlaniDavei, just correct !

I still think that if the original person doesn't know something as basic as how to hitch/unhitch that he or she really does need to be shown how to do it.  Perhaps a towing course ?

Thanks for the above . we have been doing all the above. The problem is not knowing how to hitch /unhitch, the problem is getting the extra height to do so. I am thinking that my jockey wheel is broken.when the clamp is released the bottom part seems to come out of position and when reclamped wont wind either up or down. I 've taken it apart several times and put it back together( as have several other caravanners) but every time I release the clamp the same thing happens. It's been like this for the two years we've used the van but I just thought it was something we were or were not doing This is why we've just been using the winder but the above posts have confirmed that this shouldn't be the case and maybe i'll have to invest in a new jockey wheel. We have a winterhoff hitch any suggestions?

If the bottom section comes out you have wound it too high and the threads have popped out of the outer.

Getting it back in is fiddly. LOng threaded bar into a hole when you can only fo by feel is not easy.

you are right and this can happen when wound too high ,as with any jockey wheel, but in this case it seems to move sideways whenever the clamp is released. even when the jockey is low and hasn't been wound it doesn't come out( it's not high enough) but sits at an angle which makes me think maybe the threads are worn away as there seems to be no purchase. I then have to dismantle it. This is happening nearly every time we go away and you are right it is a fiddly ,messy job. like the posts I have thought it has been something I'm doing or not doing , like I have over wound/underwound/clamping /not clamping. even as I look at it now on the drive.the jockey is at an angle even down low . This has been very useful and sometimes it is good to revisit the basics as I am now pretty sure I need a new jockey wheel! Thanks as always for the good advice
