Hi everybody, love the website and forums they have been extremely useful at supplying me with sound advice for my camping exploits thus far. However... the wife and I are now thinking about buying our first caravan and have been looking at a few different layouts. We both agree that the ones with rear dinette 4/5 berth would best suit our needs, eg Elddis Avante 505, Bailey Pageant Auvergne, Bailey Ranger 500/5 ones we've seen so far.
The only thing is I need to buy a suitable car first and I'm keen to go for a Focus Cmax 1.8 or 2.0TDI. Would this be a capable enough tow car for the vans we're looking at,(I'm thinking they could be a bit heavy) not sure if they're are any others yet with this kind of layout that offer a lighter weight version. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - Total Noob!

Thanks - Ian

Various caravans have different weights so the first thing you need to do is look at the caravans you like best, have a look at the weight plate below the door and jot down the MIRO (unladen weight) and the MTPLM (fully laden weight). Once you have done this then you can calculate the match between the chosen car and caravan respectively. The recommended outfit match for a novice tower is 85% and the typical kerbweight of a Ford Focus C-Max 2.0 diesel is 1506 kgs. so 85% of this kerbweight is 1280 kgs. so you should be looking for an MTPLM of around 1300 kgs. which is exactly what my caravan is. You can check any outfit match by using the link below.

Thanks for the reply Tango55 thats really helpful.
So Cmax 1.8, 2.0 diesel = 1300kgs
Bailey Pageant Auvergne = MIRO 1121, MTPLM 1338
Would that be too heavy really or is their room for manoeuvre? What I'm wondering is it all too easy to reach your MTPLM when you start acquiring stuff and putting it in the van? Would I be rather limited as to what went in the van with this outfit? Sorry for all the questions but the traders I've spoken to seem a little vague on the subject!!

Greetings Nutkins,

What you have been told so far is correct,

MTPLM of caravan = 85% of (not really more than), Unladen weight of car.

The MTPLM of a caravan is the MAXIMUM it should weigh when loaded.

The Unladen weight of car could only be less if you run with an empty tank. Thats because the Unladen weight of car assumes the fuel tank is 90% full.

It really makes not a jot to the whole outfit, as far as performance is concerned anyway, as to where you put all the 'stuff'' you take with you, Car or 'Van HOWEVER, if you fill the car with some equipment you  would ordinarily put in the caravan as well as the Other Half and snappers, the car is obviously going to weigh more and therefore, in principal your ratio will be less than 85% (AND THAT'S GOOD!!!)

Whatever you do, when buying a 'van, Don't take any notice of salesmen that try to tell you that you can tow the maximum figure your vehicle handbook says.

If you do you will have a miserable time towing and potentially put you and those nearest to you in danger

IE My Audi A6 Avant 2.5 (Unladen 1710kgs) supposedly can tow an outfit of 1800kgs. I wouldn't dream of towing anywhere near this figure and I've been towing since the 80's.

What you want from a towcar is one that has a relatively high kerbweight but also an efficient and powerful engine (preferably diesel). Not all cars, especially in these Green times fit the bill. Some of them couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!

I would add that if you are looking at the C Max, it would be worth hanging on for the 2.0TDCI which has 136PS. My neighbour tows a 4 berth Bailey with a C Max 1.8TDCi (115ps) and complains that it feels a little underpowered at times.

Above all, as stated above make sure it's heavy enough to safely pull your van. Problem is cars are getting lighter to save fuel/polar bears whilst vans seem to be getting heavier

Bailey Pageant Auvergne = MIRO 1121, MTPLM 1338
Therefore payload = 217kgs
The Cmax should only be pulling 1280kgs for 85% so could I skimp on the payload in caravan to make it so. What does payload include?
Salesman at Brighouse Tourer said it doesn't include essential habitable items, ie. gas bottle and leisure battery, mentioned something else but i've forgotten. Don't really know what payload equates to.....I know its stuff you put in the van when you go away but I don't know how much of it is 'essential' to keep weight down?
I've looked on what tow car and they're saying its 90% fully laden...is that acceptable for first timers? What are the implications at that figure? Would I be better looking at lighter vans? Any recommendations?

Ta

Ian
