years ago in my older cars i used to add a small amount of soluble machine oil to my coolant, used to turn the water white but i never had a pump fail, would be interested in your thoughts on its use in towcars.

Soluble oil was indeed used by many, including Scania in their trucks during non-winter conditions, but it did tend to attack the hoses and the pumps didn't seem to last any longer than if they had regular coolant.
The pump bearings these days are a sealed unit, it's only the ceramic/carbon seal that wears much or is affected by coolant type.
The Scania bearings at the time (early 1970's)were grease lubricated.

The soluble oil is called 'suds' that is used in engineering as a coolant with cutting tools and I did hear some years ago that some people did add a dose of suds in the engine coolant. They did this because it helped to stop internal parts rusting but realistically there aren't many parts made of iron apart from the steel bearing in the pump which is sealed anyway. All the components used don't contain Iron (which rusts) such as the radiator which is manufactured from Brass which is an alloy (60% Copper & 40% Zinc), the water pump otherwise known as the impeller made from Aluminium alloy (Aluminium & Zinc) and the hoses which are manufactured from Rubber. The cylinder head is also manufactured from Aluminium alloy as well as some of the engine blocks nowadays although I know that Diesel engines had a cast iron engine block years ago but technology has progressed so much that the majority of engines are better produced now. Therefore with the cooling system having little or no metal parts containing Iron I think the additive is a waste of time plus the coolants nowadays already contain a rust inhibitor and can be used for all four seasons of the year.

I would say the advantages of a bit of lubrication and anti corrosive qualities would be outweighed by the fact the seals and pipes may need changing after its softened them all.
A decent quality antifreeze in a fairly strong winter strength works wonders if you change it every few years.

So, Jeff's providing the eggs. Bill's providing the coffee. All we need now is someone to provide the toast and we've got breakfast !! In my younger days there was a product called Barrs Leaks. That must have been based on soluble oil also because that turned the water white. Not much need for those sort of additives these days.

I know when we had a leak in the radiator we used to put a couple of eggs in it that stopped it for so long...we called it "going to work on an egg "
I remember once going on holiday with my parents back in the 60's when we had a Morris 1000. My Dad's brother and his wife were travelling with us too when our engine started to over-heat. Apparently it turned out to be a leaky radiator so my uncle said we've got some eggs in the boot, put one in it. Well...we all laughed but he said it's true, the hot water boils the egg and then follows the water flow to the hole and seals it temporalily. Sure enough it worked all the time we were away for the week and replaced the radiator when we returned home. Another trick was to use a woman's nylon stocking if the fan belt broke as it could be wrapped around the 3 vee pulleys to drive the water pump and dynamo.

Thanks for the tips about "suds". I will look into this because I have two old cars, one of which still has a cast iron water pump. The other does not have a water pump at all its water circulates by thermosyphon, but still has many cast iron parts within the engine water system.

Modern antifreeze contains a rust inhibitor so there is nothing to be gained these days by adding soluble oil to the coolant. In the old days the antifreeze was drained at the end of the winter, that was when people added soluble oil.

The old guy who polished his car with diesel also put a capfull of the stuff in his petrol engine..he said it lubricated the valve stems. It ran sweet as a nut except for a wee tell tail sign of blue smoke..
