I had towed with a variety of 4x4s since 2006 and whilst enjoying the additional towing ability I was find ing it increasingly difficult to justify to myself the amount of cash I was spending week in week out on fuel.

Well, at the end of last summer I switched cars and got a 2008 Mondeo 2.0tdi.  Although having towed many miles cross country with it I had not towed any sort of distance on the motorway until recently.

I set the onboard computer to zero before we left for Devon, and waited till we got past Taunton to take a look at its calculations.  The Mondeo is very good on juice when solo, but I was astounded  looking at the readout of 36mpg (towing a van weighing approx 1420kg).

I was lucky to get 22mpg out of my Shogun!

The only true way is to fill tank to brim before towing set trip to zero,at destination after tow fill again to brim at nearest pumps as soon as possible and take mileage from trip.

I know.  I was very carefull with my right foot and was able to keep rolling at a steady 55 to 60 mph.  There were no stops or significant slowing down that needed me to pull away again.

I checked the accuracy on the on board computer in the Mondeo by using the fill to the brim method and it's pretty accurate.

Got to agree with birdman101 above - car onboard computers are usually generous in their readings

Same here 2004 mondeo estate 130.

Filled up and did approx 20 miles. solo.

Picked the van up, Fairly well flowing traffic. 50 -60mph mostly. 2 very short journeys at the other end. Couple of hundred yards each way.
5 miles into town the next morning and it only took 39.7 litres. (322 miles) I make that 39mpg? Trip said 41 i thought no way. I got 31mpg going to cornwall.

Same showing on the trip on the way back also. Ive done 100 miles solo since so that will push it down due to the short journeys.

Anyone wanna check my figures?
Started with a full tank..
322 miles put in 39.7 litres

422 miles and just brimmed with 53.7 litres.

36mpg?   On this trip i didnt bother with 6th gear. From my previous tests i concluded 6th gear actually used more fuel at towing speeds. Even when not towing.

I find the trip computer on my 2004 Mondeo tends to over read the MPG by about 10%. Nevertheless, I was disappointed when I first towed with mine to only get a displayed 27 MPG so I am guessing a real 25 mpg. Not much better than I got with the 4x4 it replaced. Admittedly it was on a fairly short run and there was a bit of traffic but I had been hoping to be closer to 30 mpg.

Good going Scarletsfan. Our Saab has a very optimistic mpg display - usually about 4-5 mpg high. On a brim-brim when I was working (Oxford-LHR commute) I was regularly returning 50+, 54 on the SID. Now I have retired, with the shorter journeys interrupted by a fortnightly dash to visit our daughter/hubby/grandson in Bovingdon. (on those trips I 'clear' the DPF, resulting in a comfortable arrival in about 50 minutes for the 55 mostly m/way miles)
With the caravan on, I haven't yet done a brim-brim but I have on most trips reset the trip mpg at the start of the run and it settles down after a few miles to read around 40-41. Quite happy with that; doesn't seem to make a difference whether I use 5th or 6th on cruise. I tend to get a move on, eg last trip out Oxford - Verwood one & three quarter hours. There are some pretty steep hills around Newbury but the outfit got up most of them in 6th after a good run at them, and 5th for a bit up Gore hill towards Newbury (long drag that one) So we are fairly happy with the Saab but for when it has to go I have been looking at the Mondeos lately - they have pretty good specs in the later ones, all the toys of the Saab plus a few. Being used to the Saab's 150 bhp I would really look to the ones with at least 163 or 175 bhp so I suppose the 2.2, but not sure how many of them have xenons which I have to have being used to them on my present car (once you have 'em nothing less will do!)

I'm surprised at your figures. On a solo run to Cornwall this year (four passengers and luggage)I was getting just over 32 mpg with my Discovery, towing the caravan (1750kgs) I get around 28/30mpg depending on traffic and road type and even towing 3500kg,which I do regularly,I get around 25mpg.
Although not as economical as your Mondeo my Discovery is not as much as a gas guzzler in comparison to its capabilities compared to a Mondeo.

Mine will happily pull 6th gear all day, But i actually get better economy in 5th gear at towing speeds.

As you get to 70mph 6th starts to work better.

Thats how it works in my car anyway.

Just for a crack, next trip (will be down to the CS at the Travellers Rest Newtown near Wickham in just over a week) I'll see how it goes using mainly 5th. But as you found, Grampian, our car pulls the 'van nicely in 6th once one gets up to around 70. Yes - I know all about the limits but the outfit is very stable all the way up and, as with driving solo, I drive to conditions with a good look-out. I refuse to drop back to 50 or less due to Mabel or Doris (or even Fred - sorry girls) in their Micras or whatever when they are crawling along at ridiculously low speeds on NSL Duals. Therefore a burst, often necessarily a blip over the limit, gets rid of them. I feel so sorry for HGVs when they come upon these cretins (my lad drives artics and it is a problem) - I think they are trying to save fuel but probably don't (I'm trying to get back on topic now!)

So, we are pretty happy with our figures considering the weight of the car and the caravan is 1100 kg max. Our old Renault 20TS petrol with a nice light old Musketeer years ago managed a round trip to & from North Wales, total just over 600 miles including the towing to & from the site, brim-brim 27 mpg.

as a ex taxi driver i can state with more than a fair degree of knowledge that brimming a tank on a diesel simply does not work ,diesel is weird stuff it contains lots of air bubbles and the the time it takes to settle depends on temperature ,time of day/night ,rocking the vehicle to settle it etc .it used to take us around 20 minutes to brim a tank properly for the next driver .and even then it would settle overnight allowing another half a gallon to be put in .
the best way to verify this is watch your fuel gauge it will drop very quickly for the first 5 miles right after filling as the fuel settles then retain that level

With more fuel efficient cars these days, any slight change in driving conditions can make a considerable difference in fuel consumption. Doing 22mpg, Scarletfan's Shogun would not show any difference in mpg whatever the conditions, but will in his Mondeo. The biggest factor to consider is wind speed and direction.

Sorry to put a downer on your consumption, but did you have a strong following wind?
