I'm looking at a 2006 Passat Sport Estate 2.0tdi DSG as a potential towcar. I was wondering what the sport suspension is like for towing? I hear the stiffer ride can be beneficial, but I have also heard there is increased risk of bottoming out due to the lower ride height.

I will be towing about 1350kg max.

Any experiences appreciated!

I towed 1375kgs with a Passat Sport Estate (56 reg) for 4 years and it was brilliantly stable. Never bottomed out, as although the suspension is lowered it is also stiffer (and the boot was full with awning, Cadac, 3-way fridge, chairs etc.

Just make sure it has had the injectors sorted (very expensive), it isn`t one of the ones with a defective oil pump drive (mine was - trashed the engine, check the engine numbers with a good VW forum or risk a bill for many, many thousands), and that the bl**dy electronic handbrake works properly.

Great towcar, but lot of potential problems.

Bit of a backward step that one. When the old Passat ran forever as long as it had some sort of fuel in the tank and oil in the engine.

It would start and go, Chip fat, Veg oil, Even proper diesel :)

Does it have a DPF also?

Thanks for the input. Must admit I have seen the horror stories of injector and oil pump failures and they're starting to put me off the 2.0 TDI Passat from that era.

I always check the Honest John website and look at owners' reviews. I thought DSG whilst excellent technical step can be expensive when it needs work and that can be as early as 40k miles. I love the idea though.
VW trades on image of reliability but in most reviews is only average.

Phone VW UK with your reg, they will tell you if its had the injector recall work-

0800 333 666.

The engine codes effected were as follows- BKP, BMA, BWV, BVE, BMR, BUZ.

It wont have a DPF (diesel particulate filter) as its to old.

The troublesome oil pump drives effected BMR and BKP engines.

My advise would be to buy one from mid 2008 onwards as this uses a Comon rail engine and is far better than the 2 litre PD unit used in the 'B6' version from 2006 unitl mid 2008. The two types can be told apart by looking at just the plastic engine cover, the CR unit has slanted style manifold type moldings whereas the older PD unit has the moldings straight on the cover.

Either that or go for the older B5.5 (2001-2006) although its getting harder to find one with respectable milage. I tow with one (1350KG) and its a fantastic tow car .
