This particular model has a 5 cylinder diesel engine known as the D5 and manufactured with a either a geartronic 'auto' gearbox or a 6 speed manual gearbox. It has 180 BHP with 258 lbs/ft. engine torque which appears to be quite a good towcar with a good return on fuel consumption. I have already checked the outfit match which works out to 83% (MTPLM = 1300 kgs.) which is ideal. I just wondered if anybody has ever towed with this model and any good or bad points would be appreciated.

Reviews suggest not quite as spacious as similar sized cars.
Almost Mondeo external size but Focus interal size.

It does seem to tick a lot of boxes.

But reviews have said its not the best Volvo made, Several recalls made.

Windscreen problem, Wheel bolts coming loose, Fuel leak with fire risks, Fuel pump failure's, Cooling fan risk of fire, Braking faults and throttle faults. Not what you expect from a Volvo.

I giess buy one thats been serviced by a dealer and had all these recalls your OK, But if you get a bad one it will rapidly empty your pockets.

Thanks for the reply Grampian. I have tried to search for reviews on the net myself but the cooling fan problem and fuel pump problems I thought were mainly related to the Volvo T5 which I'm not sure but I thought was a petrol engine.

I used to tow with a V70  which had the D5 engine and  also Automatic Gearbox and had no problems.

The D5 engine at that time was around 163 BHP but has been adjusted up to various outputs including 180.

I now tow with a Volvo XC90 which has a D5 rated at 180 and it also has the Geartronic box.

Apart from the lower vehicle weight you should be fine towing with a V50 and the Geartronic box is superb and gives you the option of using it as a manual but without the clutch, useful when going downhill.

here you go..

Volvo V50 D5 SE Sport

Voted Caravan Club Towcar of the Year 2007, the Volvo put in an impressive performance again this year. The sweet-sounding five-cylinder diesel engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission and could get you into trouble if you don't keep a watch on the speedometer. Progress is fast and seamless, but the car has impressive stopping ability too and the parking brake works a treat.

Inside, the environment oozes quality, and there's room in the back of this stylish 'sportwagon' for a fair bit of kit. There were no problems with stability, as you'd expect from the contest's returning champion. An accessible electrical socket, reasonable running costs and good load capabilities.

The one I have just purchased is a manual 6 speed gearbox but many thanks to the three who have contributed to my question which your comments were very much appreciated. In fact Big Al, that's very much identical to the one I have just bought apart from the registration number and wheel design. All I need now is the towbar and twin electrics fitted and eventually it's back out with the caravan again hopefully. Can't wait!
