it doesnt work on my mondeo anymore , car been at garage 3 days , no ignition and steering locked electronically.
its the one with the power button
anybody else had issues with these ??
seems the Ford garage is struggling with it now also.
get it fixed and get rid is the plan . no faith in this system now , imagine having no ignition / starter and your steering lock on with the van on while trying to get off a eurotunnel carriage in france ?
nightmare !!
see ya later Mondeo
I have the same. I don't have a problem YET.
However I don't like it. But it seems this is what cars seem to have now.
I will be interested in how you get on.
Good luck. They are very good cars though.
the mk4 is much nicer to drive but its technology gone mad . 1 dab of the button fetches on ignition only .
nothing out the button at all even after being replaced.
my friends ford had a similar problem and the dealer had the car for 4 days in the end they just replaced one section of the ignition harness at a time until they found the problem, they actualy charged him for all the changes and not just for the problem section,
i thing you can work out what he done with the car when he got it back.
looks like a module ( keyless vehicle module ?? )needs replacing but car needs to be transported to a different garage for 100 % diagnosis as this garage doesnt have a ford ids computer system ??
charged me £65 so far and wont charge for transporting it the 20 miles to another garage but depending on the correct module being identified it could cost between £300 and £1000
so will get it fixed then getting rid of it , cant take a hit like that on something that can fail again with no warning .
so on the look out for a different car , would consider another mondy but not with keyless start , quite like the new shape mazda 6 tourer as well but really cant afford to add money to any deal now .
bangerdom is looking more appealing by the hour !!!!

You can avoid the keyless complexity but not the various other complications. Plus the more modern the vehicle you purchase the more likely it will no longer have a discreet module for this and that but processors handling a whole range of functions.
So you could easily jump out of the frying-pan into the fire; at least with Ford the prices are likely to be somewhat better contained because its products are targeted at the lease market boys.
anyone know at what trim level mondeo mk4 goes from key start to push button ?
i dont think there are too many better cars out there for the money but maybe drop to zetec level to lose keyless nonsense.
Our Discovery 2 was full of electronics when it came out, but fortunately it had been pretty reliable. ECU's for almost everything, ours is a GS model so no electric mirrors, sunroofs, compass in the reversing mirror etc etc.
It actually seems to have been made to a better standard than that which is being produced today, our Renault Trafic vans have hissy fits occasionally, and the repair prices are pretty steep.
Thinking about our next vehicle, we may stick with the older cars as they have less to go wrong and don't require main dealer diagnostic facilities.
On the pre facelift mkIV cars, the keyless start is Titanium x only. Facelift cars have the keyless on Titanium spec too.
From my experience try & find a car with sports suspension or budget for the MAD suspension upgrade. Using the Ford ETIS system you ca nfind the spec any car you are looking at left the factory with.
From the forums it appears that later mk IV models have less issues than earlier ones.
Re other cars, Honest John reports quite a few DPF issues with Mazda 6 diesels. Also their dealer servicing rates are much higher than Ford. Also the Mazda 6 is quite a bit lighter than a Mondeo, but I do agree they look great.
Have you tried removing the blanking panel on the steering column & putting the key in that slot?

yep ,done that .does nothing no power to ignition system and with no power ford cant even diagnose the problem , what a crock of bleep bleep !! . day 5 with no car and no prospect of it working again anytime soon . the bill is mounting as various items are tested , fusebox coming out now.
totally fed up and to make it worse we`ve lost 4 days at wirral in the van this week .
To answer someone's question about turning the ignition on but not starting it, with the Ford system you have to brake and press button. If you just press the start button you can get all your pre-ignition functions.
To come back to the original thread, the Ford fob has a key inside it, so if your system wont work, you can at least free up the steering lock by using the manual key. Open up the fob, there's a key inside it.
not in mine there isnt.you insert the fob into the steering column hole and that should release it.but it doesnt work either , even the garage are close to admitting defeat now.
mine failed on a megane, turned out the steering lock had broken rendering the car useless. was fixed under warrenty.
As much as the repair bill hurts the amount you'd have already lost on the car for resale and add on the money you would lose on another car the second it left a forecourt completely nullifies any repair costs.
modern cars appear to become much more unreliable or is it just the fact that everyone is a Google expert on all the problems?
car on its way on a recovery truck to a different garage first thing tomorrow . if by some miracle theres a quick fix there we may be able to salvage a few days away somewhere local
