If its an 04 its a VW TDi engine, not a Ford TDCi unit. The Galaxy, Seat Alhambra & VW Sharran were all built on the same production line.
I would check out the Ford Galaxy owners club website.
They are great bunch. I was lucky enough to meet a few at a local car show. They really are a mine of info on the "Gal-Sha-Mbra".
As regards the problem, if its intermitent I would doubt its the MAF. Probably the EGR valve sticking. Under certain load conditions it routes exhaust fumes back in to the inlet to re-combust them. It would probably put the car in to limp mode until re-started, at which point the valve has proabably re-set itself.
Turbo vaines have been mentioned, I'm not sure if the Galaxy had a variable vane turbo, but this would certainly do the same. The actuator sticks, as said. A new turbo would sort it, but there are places that will rebuild for a few hundred pounds.
