Ok, have been reading some posts on here about premature turbo failure, due to turning engine off after a motorway drive or towing etc, when the turbo has not spun down, and the oil supply has ceased.

So my question is how does this effect new cars with stop start technology, the reason being we are due to get our new car in October a Vauxhall Antara 2.2 diesel with start stop technology, and was wondering about this, when towing etc. We currently have a V70 diesel and i always let the turbo spin down and idle for a few minutes after stopping at service station when towing etc, so am aware of the situation, its just this start stop technology seems to go against convention.

Anybody got any thoughts.

The turbo only needs to spin down after its been driven fairly hard.
If your pottering or in traffic then your not really pushing the turbo.

Coming off a motorway services the slowing on the sliproad should be enough to allow the oil to take some of the heat away.

If you pulled off after pushing it hard then stopped instantly then it maybe an issue.

Not sure how quickly the stop start would activate in that situation?

a mate got a new freelander with that stop/start device fitted, first week of ownership was in a traffic jam and battery went flat due to the number of times it stopped and started.

I have audi start stop and with the automatic gearbox it works very well. Ive an audi factory fitted towbar and when the van is connected it disables the start stop I dont know if this is standard across all makes but it would make sense.

a turbo works on exhaust gases so if youre decelerating wouldnt the turbo not be spooling anyway?

Stop start will disable if the battery state of health drops below 80% approx

What about wear and tear on the starter motor, battery and solenoids. I assume they are still fitted (LOL) or has "software" taken over ? Stop start technology could cost more than it saves?   Seriously though, it is a very good question about turbo bearing life and oil feed.

You can normally turn off the stop start feature.

the battery should never go flat, IFIAK all the cars with start stop have battery monitoring, so if the charge drops, it doesnt stop the engine until power has raised, just as, if you are in traffic and using radio/aircon etc, if the power drops it will restart the engine.

some cars with start stop when programmed for towing disable start stop whilst towing.

hopefully they would have thought about the turbo issue, the turbo in my sedona never stops spinning when the engine is running, it may not be creating much, if any boost, but take the intake air pipe off, and its defiantly shoving air through.

I would hope that they monitor the oil temp, and have a run on if the oil temp if high, a bit like the turbo timers you can get for subarus etc to the engine runs for X amount of time after removing the key etc.

I heard that the stop start starter motors were fitted in the flywheel on certain cars, if the starter packed up the cost to replace was around 4k 

As time goes by these repairs will become cheaper same as the Ford DMF thats now cheaper than when 1st reported. If my car was fitted with stop start i'd just turn it off the main point of it is to reduce the car tax bracket via the emmisions & reduce  consumption

You have to turn it off each journey. When ever you turn off the ignition it defaults back to active.

There is no way I will run a modern car without a comprehensive extended warranty in place.

My car has a handbook page full of exceptions when the stop start facility becomes inactive. Clearly they have thought about the problems stop-start can cause, including wear and tear. It certainly has a mind of its own.

When towing, the engine revs in mine are only about 1500 to 2000, barely into the turbo boost range.

vehicles with stop start generally have a heavier duty battery and starter motor than same models without stop start
