hi everyone i tow at the the momment with a nissan terrano which i have to say is spot on but i only use this for towing the rest of the time its sat wasting away on the drive as im a taxi driver and ive got a 2006 avensis for work now the time as come to replace the avensis and finances dictate that i go back to one car so ive been looking at estate cars and after looking on auto trader for  max towing weights and how they look ive come up with these two cars there both within my budget and would work as a taxi for a few years aswell as towing the caravan a abbey freestyle 540 what do you all think thanks

I tow 1480kg mtplm with a 2010 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi hatch with no issues. From mid 2008 onwards they have a 90kg nose weight allowance which I am sure helps with stability.

ive had both , passat 2.o tdi and now mondeo 2.0 tdci .for towing , not much between them although the hatch on the mondeo is more practical . both are good tugs but for 1500 kg both on the limit.
solo, the mondeo is a better drivers car , the handling is far better than the vw.

we use a 2.7 Nissan Terrano most of the time , but some times we use our 130 TDCI estate mondeo , our caravan is a Lunar lexon 640 T/A max loaded weight of 1600 KGs , being an estate we fold the rear seats down wich gives oodles of space and most od the caravan heavy stuff goes in the back , and towing wise you will not notice any difference apart from having more power from the Mondeo , you do get a bit of front wheel scrabble if you pull away quickly

Im in the same boat as the OP. Ive noticed that the later Mondeo's and Passats have a max tow limit of 1800KG, i cant help but think its abit ambituous on the stability front for a car thats upto 150KG lighter! How does that work?

At the moment I have an older B5.5 Passat on an 03 plate, tows my 1350KG Lunar a breeze and recently returned 32-35 MPG.

Id sooner have the earlier Passat like my B5.5 than than a latter one, Ive read about lots of problems with the B6 version between 2006 and mid 2008!

The new Skoda superb hatch or estate, just the job, for taxi and tow, there should be a few on the trader site within your budget

I have both Octavia and Superb as taxis, have towed our bailey ranger 540/6 with both, even though the Octavia was slightly over weight it towed as if the van was not there, admittedly it was only a short distance of 80 miles while the van was moved to another storage site.

The Superb has more room than an S class merc, and is a dream tow, 35 towing and up to 65 solo on a long run

i agree with gary , the early b6 has issues , hence i offloaded ours before it cost me . interestingly vw will now pay for the injectors doing as its a known fault , this was one of the reasons i got rid of ours .

hi, i would go with the vw, i had a b6 from 2006, it had problems with the injectors, i swapped it for a slighly newer one and that had injector problems, however vw recalled the car, replaced all of the injectors and both fuel pumps.

but go for the 170 or the 140 bhp models, the 105 bhp arent too good as the car is quite heavy.

Ive also heard of oil pump faiures on the early B6's taking the engine with it!!

I quite fancy that Mondeo Titanium X, Jon, what do you make of it?? Any niggles or otherwise? How does it compare to the B6 you moved from, build qaulity etc?

Ive heard of some electrical faults with some Mondeo's but this seems to be a common theme on anything  now as manufacturers cram so much electronics into them. French stuff [*shudder's*] seem to be particularly prone more so than others.

My mrs still drives a 1995 MK1 Mondeo estate, its beaten half to death but surprisingly it drives and handles absolutely superbly! Even by todays standards.

Ive owned 2 very quick imported Suburu Impreza's plus a Nissan Skyline GTR some years ago in my silly days so i know a thing or two about good handling cars!

Ford always could deliver fine chassis dynamics and the latest Mondeo is no exception from what ive heard!

gary the mondeo has been good until last week , then i lost ignition etc and car off road for over a week as they tried to find the fault. i thought it was down to the keyless system and was preparing to get rid if it was to become a problem but it was a broken pin in a multiplug . great car to drive handles very well and good on fuel. looks nicer than passat as well

Crikey, just read your thread on the problem!

Im tempted to say that it could happen on anything though!!

Great news you got it sorted. Must have been like looking for a needle in the proverbial hay stack.

We have just changed from a 05 Mondeo estate . To a Mondeo 09 2.2 tdci x it's brilliant towing 1500 or just under.
I wanted a passat but that would have had to be an estate . Check it out I don't think they tow as well.

Good luck

you cant legislate for an issue such as that, pure bad luck and a partial failure of a 10p part...but caused chaos !!!
