We are new to caravaning and would benefit from hearing the knowledge and experiences of other Freedom caravan owners.

Hello Motty, this is a picture of my 2001 Freedom sport. Just got back from a 600 mile round trip to St Andrews.
Although basic it does just what I want and with the awning up it has plenty of room for table and chairs etc.

Hi Motty,  we have been fortunate to have owned and loved a variety of motorhomes and caravans. The Freedom caravans are very small. This makes them easier to manhandle and tow. Being very light and with a small frontal area makes them economical to tow . Being small, you have to have patience with each othe whilst in the caravan. You cannot all (some are 3 and 4 berth !) run around inside these vans For example, either my wife or more often, myself, will cook meals whilst the other lounges/reads etc. They are however very well thought out and practical to use. The beds are flatly profiled and comfortable. ventilation is excellent , especially on the smallest Microlite models which have a pop up roof. Being fibreglass they DO NOT SUFFER FROM DAMP. An important point, as many caravans and coachbuilts can be quickly damaged by moisture in the timber frame. There is a big range of facilities available. From 2 berth to 4 berth. Some have toilet compartment, wash basin and hot running water. You can have gas heating, fridge and wardrobe. Kitchen is small , lacks a bit of worktop (just get organised !) I fitted a shower room in ours which functions well on sites with no toilets or showerblock. It's not helpful if you are very tall or larger framed. (We are not exactly petite and we cope OK!) Overall if you seek an economical, fun, practical camping experience and can cope with a smaller space you could almost certainly enjoy a Freedom caravan. The Sunstream versions are usefully a little larger than the Microlites. We went for maximum economy when towing and just love our LE version. If you search for Freedom Microlite with custom shower room on you tube, you can see for your self. An awning can make for a much larger protected area. We have adapted though, and sometimes do not even put ours up. ( A posh, French one imported from Holland at great expense) Hope this helps! Buy what suits you

Hi, I've owned 2 Freedoms, firstly a Microlite and now a Sunseeker.

Basically they come in 2 shapes/sizes which haven't changed for over 20 years.

The Microlite is the smaller one, shorter and lower with a pop top roof. The Jetstream and Sunseeker are a bit longer and higher. The MTPLM for all modern ones is given as 750 Kg.

They come in various configurations from 2 - 4 berth.

The main problem older ones suffer from is that the roof and wall lining falls off as the foam lining disintegrates with age. There are many about that have been re-lined with lightweight carpet or similar. New original linings are available.

In fact all spares are still readily available from the importers, Freedom Caravans at Stafford, who are very knowledgeable and helpful. Have a look at their website www.freedomcaravans.com

Hi ive got a freedom sunseeker club class and have altered it around , making a proper bed with proper matress wich is down all the time making it a bed on wheels, although it does have two seats and a table at the other end , but thats how we like it, we have taken that awfull lining out and replaced with proper camper van lining glued on, its small but with the awning up its twice the size, easy to manouver and tow, basically if were away for the weekend we just role up put legs down , plug electric in and put your feet up.

We had a Freedom Microlite.

You can tow it with just about any small car of around 1000cc. However, that we found was just about its only advantage.

Unless you are limited to towing with a very small car, frankly we found it just too small.

with regards to toilet question, we have a chemical toilet which we put next to wardrobe and door at night, bit cramped but saves walking to toilets ( must stress not number two's )

You have to compare a caravan of this size as a small step up from a tent, ie just somewhere to sleep at night, all caravans I have owned have been small & basic & I have always used them in that way rather than needing somewhere to sit at night & watch telly etc.

It depends what works for you, there is no point in getting a small basic 'van if you want all the facilities of a larger one.

I have a Jetstream and have owned it for about a year.  It is small inside but we have everything we need.  The shower is a bit excessive but on very rare occasions useful.  I tow with a 1.3Yaris and have found it to be satisfactory as long as you are not in a hurry.

Our tip with washing up is:  (as long as you are not cooking or making toast)-costly mistake!!  Is to use a tray on top of the glass top of the cooker and use that as your drainer.

Happy Trails

I manage the lack of a toilet in the Sunseeker the same way as I managed it in a campervan and in a tent. Don't go to campsites without toilets!

Washing up - yes the draining board is small - wash a few bits, dry them up while the next bits have a soak, repeat till all bits done.
