whilst at work today i called in to a car parts shop. i was asked by a guy working in there if it was legal to tow a caravan with a space saver wheel on the car? i work for the police but couldnt answer him as i dont know. will find out the right answer tomorrow at work
so what do you do if you get a puncture and only have space saver?
If you are towing a caravan or trailer and get a puncture then it is generally OK for a space-saver spare to be fitted to any axle on the car. check the handbook though as there might be vehicle-specific advice.
With the skinny-spare fitted you must drive straight to a tyre specialist for a repair/replacement rather than attempt a long journey.

I would not buy a car that did not have a 'Proper' spare wheel.
i wouldnt either. and if it was something i really wanted i would make sure i got a full size wheel for it. beleive it or not the latest police cars we have had come though dont have one they just have the get you home gunk that is useless.
The car handbook will tell you if you can tow with a space-saver or not. It varies between manufacturers ...... so you will only find out when the car is yours.

and the gunk, unless it has changed, renders the tyre irreparable, wont be long until there are no cars with full sized spares as standard, for one, reduced weight helps their efficiency figures when it comes to approval.
Most gunk can be removed, often with just warm water, but most tyres places will not do so, as there is no profit in it!
And as has been said, they days of providing a spare wheel with new cars is numbered, mostly due to weight, but also due to improved tyre manufacture.
Depends on manufacturer's recommendation, some say it is OK others say not suitable for towing. Spacesaver is often different wheel size (diameter)to regular wheel. If car is fitted with stability control (VSA, ESP etc) have been advised by my supplying dealer (Honda) that CR V spacesaver ris not suitable for towing and if fitted when not towing to disable VSA. Have just spent over £200 on a regular (from breakers yard) wheel for the CR V and found it does not fit into the wheel well in the boot very well a sit is much wider.

it still does render them useless although we always replace anyway after a puncture.
