I am not a caravan owner, so am genuinely interested and not trying to poke any hornets nests here. Just got back from Holland, and it seemed that they were towing with lot smaller cars than we do over here. Even medium-sized caravans over here seemed to need a Sorrento, Disco or big Estate, but over there medium-sized hatchbacks seemed a popular choice as tow car.

Are we being too over-cautious to get the 'match', or are they just lighter vans. And if so, why are they so much lighter?

Most Dutch use German or Dutch built caravans that are lighter & more basic than UK built 'vans. Many older German built 'vans weigh less than a tonne all up even if quite large, they are comparable with the early '90s UK built ABI Maurader/Sprinter lightweight 'vans. In fact The old Dutch built Beyerland 'vans were same design as ABIs of same era.

Also worth pointing out that the Dutch pay a high price for their cars. Far more than UK due to high tax regime & their road tax is far higher, £500pa for a med size petrol car & 3 times that for a diesel which is why most Dutch drive petrol cars. Larger 4x4s etc are very costly to buy & to tax, hence the smaller cars & also older cars in very good nick, well looked after, they have to be with secondhand prices for older cars double that of UK.

They also seem to tow at much higher speeds from what I have seen in France.

Try the M5 on a bank holiday weekend. You may think they raised the towing limit to 90mph and even allowed in the outside lane.

When we looked years ago, We thought it odd, Hob but no grill or oven.
Where are all the tables stored, It didnt have any other than those fitted.

I think they use them differently to us. Its a place to sit and sleep, Not cook 3 course lunches.

Go outside to eat so pointless fitting tables everywhere.

Tentz, I think you will find the Beyerlands were built in Hull as export only variants. I used to spend many an evening at King George dock in Hull waiting to depart to Europoort and they would be packing any empty space on the vehicle decks with them.

Ah! thats interesting, presumably some or all Beyerlands were UK built. They do share the same body parts as same age ABIs but with righthand door & the 'bobble finish' sides popular on older continental 'vans. The brand is no longer produced & ABI only make statics nowadays, I think.

Nice place to tow!

We go over to an engine show at Nuenen on the Dutch Bank Holiday each year and it is nice only having minor hills to worry about, and those are on the intersections

The trailer is 3.5 tonnes with the engine inside, so a fair tug.
