The time I think has come to replace my galaxy 130
And would like something to cope well with towing and not worry about weights nose, loads etc
My list hoping to spend 10 k
Freelander 2 ( might struggle at price)
Sorento worried about fuel consumption
X-trail 2.0 173   ,not any heavier than galaxy?
Any thoughts or other suggestions?

I love the freelander badge and looks, just something about them
The Sorento would mean I'd never have to worry about weights again.
X-trail cheapest to run

We looked at all the above when looking for a newer tow car as our new to us van is heavier and wasn't a very good match for the FL1 we had at the time, but we went for the FL2 , reason being we have always had landrovers, defenders, discos and freelander 1's, we just like them so are probably very biased. But it tows our 1,500kg swift so well, we can't fault it at all, it's got plenty of power and feels really nice and stable, it's also a great everyday car for us too. Only downside is my 89 year old nan does have trouble getting in lol.
But I would of gone for the sorento if we couldn't have stretched our budget a bit, found that to be a very nice car.
Everyone will have their favorites depending on what they drive.

For the budget you mention it would be difficult to make a better choice for a large tow car capable of towing most UK manufactured caravans out there. I had an '01 Alhambra Tdi (similar to your Galaxy at least in kerbweight c.1.7T) before I purchased my current Sorento in '06 and what convinced me to change was my twin axle tended to want to swing the back end of the vehicle above 50mph on the Mway, and secondly I could no longer tow at 56-60 safely in sixth gear (gearing was far too high for towing larger 'vans) even on the long flat section of M5 I tested.

The Sorento won't be as fuel efficient solo the Galaxy, but I would towing economy to be little different if you tend to tow close to 60. I was careful in loading my single axle so noseweight wasn't a big worry to me. However stability and safety was when I moved to a twin axle. The extra 400kg kerbweight and SLS of the Sorento will make those longer tow trips much less stressful safe in the knowledge that properly driven the car is much greater control of the 'van.

Stick to the general advice on caravan loading and the usual towing advice and you'll find at times that the 'van will be so well behaved you may forget it's hooked to the back of the Sorento ;-))
