I know this has probably been covered before but I am in the process of looking for a caravan and wanted to clarify what to do about insurance when towing. I have had a reasonable quotation from Caravan Guard but I want to clarify what this covers. Does it cover for damage to other vehicles if the caravan hits them? And does it cover for damage to the caravan if it hits something else ( a gate post or something!) Also what if for instance (worst case scenario) the caravan hits my car, or jacknifes into it and damages it what insurance is this covered under- my cars or the caravans- I know it would be claiming off yourself either way but just in case a lot of damage was caused! Only asking as a friend's caravan wheel fell off the other day causing damage to the car too. Negative thinking but thought I'd better ask! Thanks in advance.
If the caravan is connected to your car then the cars insurance covers all third party risks. If the caravan is damaged whilst towing the car insurers will only cover third party risks so the caravan insurers cover the damage. If the caravan is unhooked then all damage whether third party or to your van is covered by the caravan insurers, but just check what exclusions they make on the policy.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Thanks Bill, when you say if the caravan is damaged it will only cover third party risks- doesn't that mean only covers if damage is done to a 3rd party vehicle and not to my own caravan?
When your caravan is being towed, for third party risks the caravan & car are viewed as one entity. In case of an accident even if caravan detaches from car in the course of the accident, damage/injury to third party caused directly by caravan is no different from damage/injury caused by car, you are covered by your car's insurance.
None of this will cover damage to your caravan in any circumstances. which is why most owners insure their caravans although it is not a legal requirement. Separate caravan insurance covers fire/theft/damage while towing or sited(theft cover will require security devices such as wheel clamp fitted when unattended though). It also covers third party risks while sited although in practice as ownership of caravan does not mean automatic liability, ie you would not be liable if vandals released the handbrake of your caravan & it rolled away & caused damage, this cover is not really necessary & if you have an old 'van worth only a few £100s its not really worth insuring.
Also worth pointing out that if your uninsured caravan was rammed by a car & was not considered your fault you could claim off driver of that car. To be on safe side probably a good idea to inform your car insurance co. that you will be towing & towbar fitted to car as some ins co's may regard this as a 'modification' although they do not charge extra premium.
Ask Caravan Guard to send you a policy document out first to see excactly what you are covered for and have a good read through it (including the small print). If there are any doubts then give them a call on their freephone number to clarify anything that is not quite understood and they are quite helpful actually and will explain in detail anything you need to know . That's what I did and was more than happy to go ahead with their caravan insurance cover plus I also look to see who the underwriters are because it's these people that actually pay out in the event of any claim which is this case is Royal Sun Alliance who insure all the Motabilty vehicles so they are respected recognised company. You can ask any caravan insurance to send a policy document out before parting with any money and when you filter through the details it's amazing how some insurance companies don't cover what you expect to be covered for. After having received about 4 quotes I found that Caravan Guard to be the best one in relation to cover and always look to see if the company operate with freephone telephone numbers too. Although one insurance company was slightly cheaper there was one category that wasn't actually covered and the excess was also more so there ar many things you have to consider first before accepting the cheapest quote. I spent several hours reading through all the insurance documentation so I decided on Caravan Guard for more reasons than one.

Getting confused with all this
That is correct. If your caravan gets damaged then your caravan insurance has to cover it whether you are hooked on or not.
